Hi,

Recently, it was announced at mass that one of our older parish priests had retired from “priestly ministry” (my words). He is still often present during mass but wears a plain, unadorned white robe tied about the waist with a knotted rope-belt (this is in a New South Wales, Australia arch-diocese).

Having retired from priestly ministry, is he now regarded as living a more monastic life style, more as a monk/religious brother?

Just asking out of curiosity, but thanks in advance for being clued in.

Grant. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Recently had a priest retire where I live, He is not as active, due to either age, health etc. He also is at every Mass …Though priests retire they are always a priest, they preform light duties. I would think it depends on the Order the priest is in whether or not the priest does want to now choose the monastic life style within that order would probably be appropriate… God Bless.🦋🦋🦋

In my experience, retired priests do as much ministry as their health and stamina allow. They say Mass occasionally, hear confssions, and offer whatever support they can.

I’m reminded of one elderly friar who was one of the holiest people I’ve met. I used to invite him to come to RCIA and just talk about anything because it was so good for the catechumens and candidates to be exposed to someone like him.

He is a diocesan priest; he will still normally lead the entrance procession & administer communion etc.

Thanks for your insights guys, & God bless! 😁

Sounds like he is doing what he can to remain relevant. Say a prayer for him and if you are up to it, thank him for his years of service to the people of the diocese.
