Rev David Mainz asks the Queen to overturn Canadian SMM Bill C-38

Rev David Mainz, a Canadian broadcaster, has written to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England asking her to use her executive power to instruct the Governor General of Canada to withhold her signature from Bill C-38. For a bill to become law in Canada, it must first be passed by the House of Commons, then passed by the Senate, then signed by the Governor General who is the Queen’s representative. Apparently there is a precedent for this. Rev Mainz points this out in his letter. I cannot copy the letter as in line text because his webpage has some kind of glitch in it. But here is the link:

I really wish it would work but I doubt it will, the Governor General is largly ceremonious and though she can block the bill, it is nearly impossible that she will…

Still this person’s actions are comendible, taking every step possible to save marriage.

It’s a long shot but Mainz does give a precedent:

It was reported some years ago in our press that in your role as “defender of the faith” you acted unilaterally to stop a Danish pornographer from coming into the United Kingdom to produce a blasphemous movie against our Lord and Saviour.

Mind you, the Queen had the anti-blasphemy law to fall back on. What would she fall back on here? Mainz does point to her role as head of the Anglican Church. The Anglican Church has made some official statements against SSM in Canada. It’s a stretch. If anything all this activity evidences the seriousness of the situation vis a vis the Catholic Church, at least. Too bad people woke up so late in the game.

Hmm, it is a precedent, but I think the situations are completely different. Like you said it is a long shot, but definately worth trying. I know it would cause an uproar in Canada if the Queen did not give Royal Ascent, but it is well worth it. I guess we can only pray that it goes through.
