Today I bought the New American bible (study version) and browsed through it. When I got to Revelation the commentary on the bottom stated that the Woman in Revelation 12 represented “God’s people in the old and new testament”. I am very confused now because I had read on these message boards that it represented Mary. Does the church have an official teaching on this verse?

Thanks!

I am sure that the Church does not have any dogma stating that the passage is only about Mary. But the Church does teach that Scripture has different senses. Personally I believe that the primary sense is Mary. An Early Church Father named Oecumenius wrote a wonderful intepretation on it. I have posted it completely on this forum before and it might be retrieved if one looks for it. But here is a link to some of it found in the Ancient Christian Commentary, unfortunately a couple of pages are not available. Plus you get the interpretation from other Fathers of the Church! Here is the link litteralchristianlibrary.wetpaint.com/page/Rev.+12+Mary+ACC
