I have been interested in Catholic commentaries on Revelation, and interested in what some of the good Catholic commentaries say about the beasts coming out of the sea. Does anyone have any commentaries such as the Navarre or Ignatius that interpret that passage? Thanks!!

Well, your first problem is that there is no Revelation 12:19. The chapter, which does in fact end with mention of “the beast come out of the sea,” ends with Revelation 12:17.

There really are no good commentaries on the “beast come our of the sea,” which is mainly discussed in Revelation 13. I have a theory, but most here would regard it as profoundly bizarre.

aw, come on, you’re not just going to leave us hanging, are you? the NAB has all kinds of notes about this, which cannot be read in isolation from the rest of chapter 12 or chapter 13 (or the entire book for that matter) the beast is Satan.

If you look again a little closer you will notice that I did not ask about 12:19, but I indicated chapters 12 through 19, such as 12-19.

I started a study on end times and will put together a paper concerning key passages, fully in the light of the Fathers and the Catechism of the Catholic Church along with other rich Catholic sources. Give me a few weeks and I will make it avaliable for anyone on here to have for their own personal studies.

In reference to Revelation 13:1-18, The Navarre Bible: The Book of Revelation, Four Courts Press: 1998, page 104, says in part:

Satan, the ancient serpent, launches his attack via the beasts, whom he endows with his power (cf. vv. 2, 12). The beasts stand for those who in the course of history have embodied the powers of evil in one way or another. The first beast (vv. 1-10) symbolizes political power taken to such an extreme that it supplants God; the second (vv. 11-12), those forces of evil who defend, justify and propagate that deification of power by giving it an acceptable face. These beasts are, first, a reference to the Roman empire, but that empire is seen in turn as being the tool of a diabolical power which forever hovers over mankind and will become more virulent as the End approaches.
