Good morning! I am new to this site and new to coming back to the Church (Catholic school kid here)! I am still trying to understand a lot of why we believe what we do, and I’m finding understanding of the Church through the help of the Holy Spirit. Also, I can’t forget Mary. After I had started praying for wisdom with a truly seeking heart of truth without desiring a specific outcome I started studying Marian doctrine and that is when I knew the Catholic Church held the fullness of truth. My husband, however, was raised by a former Catholic now anti-Catholic dad. He is a wonderful Christian man that loves God, but questions my reversion to Catholicism. I’m praying for his guidance (as is he praying for a soft heart and wisdom), but he’s asking some questions I need some help answering. For instance, how do I go about explaining why baptism is necessary for salvation? We’ve talked about the Church’s logical doctrine on this, but he read this article and this one. How do I gently and logically handle his questions. He specifically asked me where the Bible explains baptism is necessary for salvation.
I think the big issue here is to first get him to understand why the Catholic Church has authority and the importance of Sacred Tradition from Apostolic teaching. I’m just not really sure how to do that. I’m not trying to forcefully convert him, but he said he wants me to tell him why I believe what I do and explain it to him. I have read historical writings about the early Church and I believe that God is a God of authority and order, therefore, he would not leave us His Word with no authority on it. Are there any good recommended books on the authority of the Church I can read with him?
I appreciate any help you give even if it’s just friendly advice if you have had a situation like this before. Obviously, this has been a strain on the relationship between my husband and I seeing as our faith is very important to us and a huge part of our family. We’re a Christian homeschooling family and we’re active in our Church. Our daughter is active in a Christian based girl scouting troop and homeschool groups. So, this changes a lot in his mind as all of these things are not Catholic based. Thanks for any insight on this at all!
