Revert Saints!?

Do we know of any Saints that have done apostasy like described in Hebrews and then reverted back?
“For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they then commit apostasy, since they crucify the Son of God on their own account and hold him up to contempt.”
So do we have any revert saints to say” Hey bro come on back to our Church even if you left to another religion God is still waiting for you!"

There is one saint I recall who was a Roman and a Catholic, but got led into worshiping a Roman God.

He deeply regretting doing this and repented. Afterward, when the persecutions were going on, he went and submitted himself as a Marty and is recognized as such by the Church.

I wish I could remember his name.
 
St. Augustine of Hippo comes to mind. He was raised by his Catholic mother (father was a pagan), fell away as a youngster, became a Manichee, then reverted to Catholicism. However, he wasn’t baptized until after his conversion / reversion, so he doesn’t quite count.

Of course, there are many saints that were baptized Catholics that lived a life of sin and only later “reverted” in the sense of taking their faith seriously, e.g. St Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis of Assisi.

I can’t immediately think of a saint that was baptized Catholic, left the faith for a Christian denomination, reverted to Catholicism, then was canonized.

Anyone?
 
St. Patrick. His father was, if I remember right, a deacon; Patrick was a bit on the wild side when a teenager, taken as a slave by a raider at age 16, and reverted during the six years that he was a slave in Ireland. 😃 :harp::shamrock2:

I think the OP’s question is still not answered however. Both St Augustine and St Patrick left the Church before fully and consciously entering it, or so it seems. Many people lose the faith in their early years and then return, and some of them are canonised (as mentioned by other posters above). We certainly have other examples of saints who had a sinful past. They seem to have followed the trajectory of the Prodigal Son.

I am unaware of any who having embraced Christianity as an adult, and “who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,” have reverted and been canonised.

Please prove me wrong! 🙂
 
Blessed Anthony Neyrot

To briefly summarize. Blessed Anthony Neyrot was a Dominican Priest who lived in the 1400’s. He studied under St Antonius of Florence. While on a ship which was captured by Moorish pirates he was made a prisoner, in order to regain his freedom he renounced Catholicism, became a Muslim and even got married.

Upon hearing of the death of St Antonius of Florence he had a dream of the Saint. Which helped him to renounce Islam, confess his sins, return to the church. He was martyred for his faith.

I’ll ask him to pray for the reversion of my children! Maybe he’ll get a second miracle!

There is a comment on him in Lives and Prayers of Dominican Saints, Blessed and Pius Men and Women. which is very relevant to this question.

I think we have a winner 👍 unless the OP isn’t satisfied by a Blessed instead of a fully canonized Saint.
 
You guys are right that he is Blessed and not yet a canonized Saint. It turns out he was beatified by Pope Clement Xlll but he is not yet canonized. I know a good number of people who have left the Catholic faith…and what a blessing it is that I have found another intercessor for my many fallen away Catholic family members and friends.

Nope. More like St Francis, who **felt **that he/she lived a bad life before fully responding to Christ’s call, however they never rejected the faith nor lived a life which was sinful by normal standards.
