Revised Liturgy of the Hours?

Hi all,

I am considering upgrading from the one volume Christian Prayer to the complete four volume LOTH. I would hate, however, to pay over $100 for a set of books that might soon be obsolete. Does anyone know if a revised LOTH is in the works?

I know that revisions are underway on the Roman Missal. Is the LOTH something that could be subject to similar revisions? Even if not, could it be reprinted to include new saints? I’m under the impression that Catholic Book Publishing’s current ediion of the LOTH dates from the 70s and that the last Supplement was published in 1992, so it wouldn’t surprise me if an update were in the works.

Well, there’re 2 sets of rumours going around now. One is that ICEL is working on the revision of the Liturgy of the Hours right now; another is that ICEL is not doing anything because it has heard that Rome might be overhauling the Latin Liturgy of the Hours. I’m not aquainted with people in the know, so perhaps someone on the forum could elucidate.

Whichever the case is, however, it would likely take quite a while for the new texts to be approved, published and made mandatory. The Missal took 7 years and we’re still about 1 year at least to implementation, so there’s no reason to think that the retranslation of the Liturgy of the Hours will be done within a couple of years. Given the cost to purchase new books (4 volumes for Priests), it is quite possible that the Bishops might give a generous period before making the new translation mandatory.

I think it is always good to start early in joining the Church in her official daily prayer. My personal advice would be: don’t delay.
