Revised Standard Version and Lifeway Christian Bookstores

I wandered into a Lifeway Christian bookstore today. For those who may not know, Lifeway is a major Christian bookstore chain. I asked a lady who worked there if they might have a Revised Standard Version Bible bound in leather. She rolled her eyes and said " no we no longer keep those on our shelves." I asked her why. Then she told me they could order one for me but they preferred not to stock it since it is the version Catholics like to use! I was stunned. I told her I thought is was essentially the King James version just updated into modern language. She said “well the Catholics like to use it and they don’t shop with us they go to their own stores.” I said I see and she went to help another customer.

Any thoughts on this? They seem not to trust the Revised Standard version of the Bible just because Catholics are fond of it!
 
I think the employee’s attitude will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course, if they stop selling everything that Catholics like to buy, they can expect many fewer Catholic customers.

I hate to think what they would do if Catholics ever decided to embrace the King James Version!

Of course, this could be just a business decision – if only Catholics are buying the RSV, and Catholics don’t shop there, then they probably can’t sell many of them.

DaveD, you might want to try a Catholic bookstore, and get the RSV-CE – that way you get the RSV plus the Deuterocanonical books. 🙂
 
You have to get the RSVCE for more than just the deutero-cannonical books. Many verses are rendered more failthfully.
 
Bible Factory Outlet stores (at least the one here in town) have a whole shelf of Catholic products. They’re ecumenical–they’ll take anyone’s money 😛 😃

My limited experience shows many Protestants like NIV, that seems to be the overhwelming choice in a lot of non-Catholic/secular bookstores…

Ironic. The RSV was originally a Protestant translation.
