Does anyone know what the official Catholic stance on what Protestants term a “Revival” is?

A revival is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit usually accompanied by miraculous signs and wonders. My Protestant friends and family have been constantly e-mailing me about some revival taking place in Florida and I’m not sure how to respond.

Tell that you have this happen at your Catholic parish every time Mass is celebrated!! Jesus Himself shows up!!! Along with the Father and the Holy Spirit and all the Saints and Angels of Heaven!!! In fact each person gets to have a short private meeting with Him when they go to Holy Communion!!!

From what I can gather, a revival is similar to a Catholic parish retreat in that someone not normally associated with the parish is brought in to “lay down the law” so-to-speak, so that the regular priest or deacon doesn’t tick too many people off. We normally (but not always) get our anti-contraception message from retreats.

In Pentecostal terms, a revival is a big charismatic throw-down where the Holy Spirit is said to be present in the church. There was a huge one down in Pensacola, Florida at the Brownsville Assembly of God which started in the mid-90’s and went on for years, and wound up being extremely controversial.

Go and study the great revivals of history and the great men involved with them, such as Wesley, Whitfield, Spurgeon, etc.

I’m guessing that they’re talking about the “Lakeland Revival”. Judging protestant doctrine on this is no different than judging Roman Catholic doctrine by the pedophile priests in your religion.

It is heretical, is not Biblical in any way, and has been condemned by nearly all Christian leaders.

I think you’re confusing the Brownsville Revival, which took place in Brownsville, Tx, with the Pennsacola Outpouring, which took place in Pennsacola, Fl, just up the road from us.

We have a parish mission where we have a visiting priest come speak for a week During this time we also have Eucharistic Adoration as well as one or two healing Masses. Its has been a very moving experience when I’ve gone. Sometimes it gets a bit too charismatic during the healing Masses but the nights when we just have a speaker (no Mass) on subjects such as spiritual warfare and even exorcism I have really enjoyed it and gotten a lot out of it. We have had a member of the Fathers of Mercy come down before and they do a great job.
