Revelation 13:16-18

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a MARK in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
And that no man might buy or sell,
save he that had the MARK, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Rev. 13:16-18

Since the Internet is not a mark on the hand or head it is not the mark of the beast. It could be a Tatoo like the Jews in Concentration camps but they did not need a tatoo to buy and sell things. It was nearly a beast like mark on them. Remember that Beasts, Goats and cattle are often marked in this way to show ownership. The mark could be a Tatoo or even simpler an RFID chip. Which is a chip with a Series of Numbers or Serial Numbers that broadcast themselves via a radio Frequencey Identification.

tldm.org/News4/MarkoftheBeast.htm

There is a Family living in Florida that has already to have this chip implanted to serve as a sort of Medical ID card.

These chips are under current development buy companys like Texas instruments and they come in many varieties like Pet ID chips and SMART DUST. They are already being tested in Products like Bic Razors from Walmart. These types of Trials are a form of getting people assimulated to products in every day use. So they become innoculous or harmless in Appearance.

The number 666 represents extreme imperfection. SO the number of the man, is like the number on your social security card or your credit card. It could even be a social security card, credit card or a drivers lisecense or any form of ID with a number on it for your name.

Revelation 14:9
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his MARK in his forehead, or in his hand, Rev. 14:9

What do I say here except what do people worship more than money?
Revelation 14:11
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the MARK of his name. Rev. 14:11

Revelation 15:2
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his MARK, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. Rev 15:2

Almost everyone accepted the mark. Or many people. Millions?

Revelation 16:2
And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the MARK of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image. Rev. 16:2

Affliction sometimes follows sin. The people that accepted this mark were afflicted with a sore? Perhaps an infection.
Revelation 19:20
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the MARK of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Rev. 19:20

Revelation 20:4
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his MARK upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. Rev. 20:4

People that did not accept the mark, were offered up as a sacrifice to the beast. Each person that refused the mark and was murdered in the name of the beast, spent 1000 years with Jesus.

This is not what is stated in the Book of Revelation. It is a non-Catholic interpretation that is as silly as stating that the WWW is the Beast.

Sorry if I sound so terse on this subject, but I think that people are looking in the wrong direction on this matter and in doing so they are being fearful over nothing.

There is a logical answer to what is meant and in order to understand what John meant you need to have an understanding of the period in question. The pagan Romans were not very “pure” and from the point of view of the Evangelist, it would be easy to depict such behaviour is this way. It is not all that much different than the way Daniel is written when it comes to describing the excesses of the Babylonians.

By trying to take the Book of Revelation too literally people are coming up with all sorts of false interpretations about what is ahead, yet there is a simple and logical explanation. If you belong to God then you will not fall into serious sin, and you will not be tempted to abandon your faith in pursuit of money and pleasure. King Solomon had been given the gift of Wisdom yet he wasted that wisdom because he received vast riches as tributes from the nations. He fell into apostasy because he disobeyed the Lord regarding the taking of foreign wives. He began to worship the gods of his wives. The mark of the beast might have something in common with the 666 talents of gold received by Solomon.

Well said and I fully agree with you Lisa!

Perhaps in order to understand the mark of the beast on the hand/forehead, one must first understand the mark of God on the hand/forehead.

Deut. 11:18 You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead.

Was John familiar with this passage when he wrote Revelation?

Whose Word fuels your passion (heart)?

Whose Word is your strength (hand)?

If the world dictates to your heart, you will find physical solutions to scriptural conundrums.

Whatever Dude…regardless if you believe it or not…the beast will be of flesh and blood…he will be the anti-christ, so in my belief, he will assume human status, and the mark will be imposed upon people who willingly object to God and desire to follow Satan…there will be no trickery involved and people will not be fooled into taking the mark…so go sale crazy somewhere else.

Just came across this forum today, but have been a long time reader of Catholic.com. Anyway, Revelations always peeks my interest, but I think we should all look at what the Catholic Church has to say about the issue of the Anti-Christ, etc.

What does it say? Relatively little, and the Church is the authority on Scriptural interpretation.

As for the beast being hidden in computer chips, on the internet, or in SS numbers, I think as the faithful in Christ we should understand that God is not in the business of deception. Those who love Him will know what the mark is, i.e. it will be obvious. He will not let His little ones be led astray without their own conscience making a free decision to turn away from Him.

Also, all this speculation is useless when Christ Himself didn’t even know when the end times would be. Only the Father in heaven knows (Matthew 24: 36). We truly cannot predict.

Where does it say in revelations the beast will be flesh and blood?

I thought the implanted chips/barcodes/webaddresses /embedded codes/ whatevery hysteria we are hyping this week is the Mark of the beast, not the actual beast itself, its logo so to speak, by which fellow beasties recognize each other. So that old TV show about the California highway patrol with the cute cops was really about the beast? go figure.

Fair enough.

What information is conveyed in the passage from Deuteronomy?

Deut 11:18 You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead.

Were the faithful Jews to be physically “marked” on the hand and/or forehead, or was the sign of fidelity made apparent by living lives according to their love for God?

A “mark” can be a sign of ownership. Deut. 15 captures this sentiment regarding slaves who forego their freedom in the seventh year to remain a slave to a loving master:

Deut 15:16 But if he says to you, “I will not go out from you,” because he loves you and your household, since he is well off with you, 17then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his earlobe into the door, and he shall be your slave forever.

Sacrificing the remainder of one’s life for love of the master. Blood on the doorpost, even. Marked forever as a willing slave. Paul uses this Greek term “doulos” to refer to himself (slaves of Christ) in Phil. 1:1.

The Blessed Virgin uses the feminine form to regard herself in Luke 1:36 (“I am the handmaid of the Lord.”).

But, just as neither Paul nor Mary were externally “marked”, Deut. 11 references not some external “mark”, but an internal “mark”. God’s mark is not external.

Romans 2:29 Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart—it is spiritual and not literal. Such a person receives praise not from others but from God.

The life we lead marks us to all observers.

Mark 12:30
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ Deut. 6:4,5]

Luke 10:27
He answered: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ Deut. 6:5] ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Lev. 19:18] ”

Scripture is a seamless garment, and great violence can be done when passages are ripped from context.

If, as some here say, the mark of the beast is some high-tech gizmo, then I must ask what is the relevance of this biblical book for all the Christians of the past 2000 years?

Worthless warnings to billions of Christians, but only important to this present generation? Wow.

The apostle John expounded on this a bit more:

1 John 2:18
Children, it is the last hour! As you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. From this we know that it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But by going out they made it plain that none of them belongs to us.
20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge. 21I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and you know that no lie comes from the truth. 22Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23No one who denies the Son has the Father; everyone who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father.
It makes one wonder what marked the followers of the early antichrists since bar-codes hadn’t been invented yet.

Just a passing thought: Who today denies the Father and Son?
How are they “marked”?

Salmon,

this is an excellent example of how to understand what John was trying to convey in the Book of Revelation. It is true, you need to understand what is meant by the mark of God. For anyone who has been marked by the angel as belonging to God will not have the mark of the beast.

Salmon,

I think that your comments are very insightful with regard to this issue of anti-christ and “the beast”. We all waste far too much time upon useless self-interpretation of the Book of Revelation that is based upon error of thought.

Who was the anti-Christ in the days of the early Christians? All you persecuted the Christians and denied that Jesus is the Messiah.

What has become more important than God today? Money.
What destroyed Solomon and eventually the Northern Kingdom of Israel? The desire for money and the desire for power.

MaggieOH

Yes but what I am saying is if you replace the money with credit, or credit chips. The credit force replaces the power of money or God. That system could become the beast, since it would be self regulatory once the system was initialized.

Weve already moved more than what %40 to a cashless society.
