Hello everyone,

I saw in following in our latest church bulletin:

We are fortunate to have a nationally known Catholic theologian, author and teacher Richard Gaillardetz, Phd to
lead us in lectures along with a liturgical experience these four days.

The liturgical experience part got my a bit worried so I started looking into Dr. Gaillardetz. The word around the 'net wasn’t all that postive but I wanted to see if anyone around here had any previous experience with him.

Thanks for any (name removed by moderator)ut,
Peace be with you…

So I don’t know if no response is a good thing or a bad things. 🤷 🙂

If I were you, I’d run far away! I’ve seen some of his stuff, and it’s questionable at best. I know of at least one diocese that will not allow him to speak in their diocese because of the positions he takes that are contrary to Church teaching (e.g. women priests, contraception, etc.).

One of his main talking points is his whole theory of “levels of assent” owed to Church teaching. He breaks down Church teaching into four different categories and labels what type of allegiance Catholics owe to each level. His divisions are arbitrary and, as you might guess, all the hot-button moral issues (contraception, abortion, homosexuality) fall into his fourth and lowest category (over which one is free to disagree with Church teaching). He is not a reliable teacher of the Catholic faith by any stretch of the imagination.

Here’s an article from Karl Keating of Catholic Answers responding to Gaillardetz’s article on a “New Apologetics”. That should give you a bit more insight into Gaillardetz’s mindset.
