I do pray every day to god . To thank him and repent for my sins . I still feel distant from him . Is ok to talk to him as a friend ?

Yes, like a friend is fine.
Perhaps try to talk to a spiritual director at your Church about it.

Perhaps try to pray the Rosary as well as other “preformed” prayers, ie the Our Father, in addition to your mental prayers.

Perhaps you are going through a common dry spell which can strengthen your pure trust and faith in God.

It is also possible that you might be in a state of mortal sin, which kills us. Perhaps go to confession if this is the case.

The above is all assuming you are Catholic.

Hi Om,

I “talk” to God through my Journal. When I do that it helps keep my mind clear and focused on my prayer. I also feel much closer to Him this way. I ask for His help or tell Him about what’s hurting me. This way, I feel like He’s listening.

I talk to God like He is my best friend. We just have that type of relationship. I think it takes a little while to feel close to God. Keep praying and don’t give up! Perseverance is key. Whenever I feel distant from God, I like to go for bike rides and talk to Him. Just me and Him and silence. Praying aloud helps me too. There are times where you will feel distant from Him because He is testing you and your faith in Him. Again, perseverance is important.

I don’t know that there is any “right or wrong” way to pray, assuming you are sincere in your prayer efforts.

With that being said, there are all kinds of prayer methods that can make prayer more meaningful and that can help you feel closer to the Creator. Attending daily Mass (or other daily prayer services) is probably the simplest and most effective ways to pray for lay Catholics seeking to be more devout. If you prefer to pray alone, there are also all kinds of prayer books that can help in this effort as well.

Yes, definitely. I pray this way quite often. Just like he is sitting a chair across from you. I find it very helpful. I pray other ways too, but this one is very good for relieving my mind. I feel closer to God. I say just about anything I want (in my head, not out loud) - he can read your thoughts anyway, right? Even if you are burying something underneath structured prayer, are distracted, etc. May as well be honest. I think that probably really impresses him. I see him as pretty unflappable.

Yes I walk to God all the time. Sometimes I end up yelling out of frustration, no too mich, just once in a whole. I know God hears me, but I just yell sometimes hoping he,ll pay extra attention as these things are so important to me. I end up apologizing and asking for forgiveness for my temper.

I haven’t thought of that. What a great idea. I used to have journals when I was younger, dedicated to no one, At some point in my life later on, when I was stuck, I read them and I realized I want to let it go and so burned them all and felt better. But I don’t think I could destroy later on a journal dedicated to God. This I should keep for as long as I live I think. This scares me in a good way. 😃

It is absolutely OK. You might want to read St. Teresa of Avila’s “Way of Perfection.” It’s a great help on learning to pray.
