RIP Olivia de Havilland

Wikipedia has a list of actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood who are still living. One name that jumped out to me is Eva Marie Saint, who was in On The Waterfront and North By Northwest. But those were both in the '50s, well after Gone With The Wind.

Apparently the oldest living major actor from that era is Norman Lloyd, age 105. He was in two movies for Hitchcock in the '40s, Saboteur (1942) and Spellbound (1945).

Norman Lloyd would appear to be the only one older than Olivia. I think he’s more familiar to fans of “St. Elsewhere” than anyone else.

Eternal rest grant unto her o Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

For my mother’s 90th birthday party, 6 years ago, my sister made up a collage of 28 famous people older than Mom (not an exhaustive list, naturally*). Since then we have been crossing people off as Mom has out-lived them.

After losing Ms de Havilland yesterday, 7 people remain: Norman Lloyd, Bob Barker, Norman Lear, Bob Dole, Henry Kissinger, Betty White, and Prince Philip.

There Can Be Only One!

From @MrZoom 's lst, the most recognizable (to me) name missed is Glynis Johns, whom I remember as Mrs banks in Mary Poppins.

You’re thinking of Howie Mandel.

She was a legend, one of the last of the Golden Age of Hollywood. What a life she had!

Rest in peace.

Vivian Leigh was extremely bitter when Olivia won the Oscar instead of herself. She felt hers had been the starring female role in that film, and that she should have been so acknowledged by the Academy. That Olivia got it felt to Vivian like a slap in the face. I certainly can understand her sentiment. I think they both should have gotten Oscars.

Olivia was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for GWTW, and she didn’t win. So she wasn’t in competition with Vivian Leigh and did not get an Oscar.

Also, Vivian did win the Best Actress Oscar for that film, so she likely wasn’t bitter about anything.

Then maybe it was the other way around. I seem to recall, some years back, watching a documentary about Gone With the Wind and the actors and actresses who played the various characters in it, and I seem to recall that Vivian had gotten shorted in some way at award time, but maybe it was Olivia, instead. That was some time ago.
