Our priest who has been celebrating the EF mass regularly has been using the roman ritual (1962 version with latin and english side bu side) in english to bless religious articles including holy water. He even uses english translation for the absolution prayer for confession.

I know for certain that as long as he says the word “I absolve you in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit”, the confession is valid and that the religious articles are blessed since priest can use their own words in blessing. Not sure about holy water as I have read somewhere that since holy water is linked to liturgical celebration it the prayer of exorcism and blessing should be said in latin. However, is it allowed to use the english translation of the roman ritual?

Much as I don’t like it, it is legitimate. I understand though that an FSSP or ICRSS priest will usually say the absolution in Latin. Also in blessing religious articles.

The EF Mass, however, is said in Latin. If you wish to follow in whatever English translation you have, that’s entirely up to you.

Our priest will only bless something using the latin text when it is in the context of mass itself such as the blessing of candle on the feast of purification. Correct me if I’m wrong but I have always thought that when using the 1962 roman ritual, it must be said in latin except for few approved english texts
