I was raised in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS), which fancies itself the true church of Jesus Christ and the church as Joseph Smith, Jr. (and God I suppose) intended it to be.

Recently there was a split in the RLDS that produced yet another RLDS, but this time its the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I have to say, the Remnant Church is a tad more water tight than the LDS, which they call the “Utah Mormons”, or “Brigham Young’s followers” (who are truly bizarre).

I myself cannot really say what made me leave the now Remnant Church for Catholic Church (I converted in high school and was finally baptized on Holy Saturday, 2002). I can say it wasn’t for the reasons Catholic Answers of other debunkers of Mormonism have produced, as the RLDS is a peculiar branch. It may be that not many RLDS/Remnant Church members convert to the faith precisely because there is little material that evangelizes to them. I simply realized that what the RLDS believed about Catholics was false, and came to understand about the faith what the RLDS doesn’t. So I determined that the Catholic faith and church is real, the RLDS/Remnant Church isn’t.

I just can’t tackle the RLDS on my own. So, does anyone want to help me?

The Remnant Church’s website is theremnantchurch.com, check it out and please, if you have a moment, provide your comments. Take your time.

Oh, and if there are any other former RLDS members on here (and I doubt it), please contact me. Being the only catholic in a large RLDS family is a lonely station in life, so it would be nice to connect with others (if there *is any *to connect with).

Nobody will respond to this thread will they? sigh

So lonely . . . .

Isn’t the RLDS Church now known as “The Community of Christ?”

Thanks,
Paul

Another question about the RLDS - every RLDS I’ve ever spoken to denied emphatically that Joseph Smith was ever plurally married. Is that the official RLDS position?

Thanks,
Paul

Both the Remnant Church and the Community of Christ churches were once part of the Reorganized Church (RLDS), but they are not quite the same now.

It would be fair to say that all three of the above denominations deny that Joseph Smith, Jr. was a polygamist.

Wow! I thought I had it tough as the only Catholic in a family of Southern Baptists, but you’ve got it tougher. I just said a prayer for you. God bless!

Thanks so much JKirkLVNV.

Maybe I only think I have it tougher than everyone else. Of course, that can hardly be true.

Anyway, I appreciate your prayer and will return your thoughtfulness.

I think you might have a hard time this thread. I don’t know anyone who knows much about the RLDS. In fact, the only things I “know” are:

They followed JS’s son instead of BY
They use the original 1830 BoM
They use JS’s complete corrected Bible

Am I correct with these?

Maybe you have been called to witness to the church. Maybe you have been called to educate people about the Catholic church with relation to the RLDS.

I had a friend years ago who was RLDS. I learned quite a bit about it at the time, most of which I’ve forgotten I’m sure. I attended an RLDS wedding with my friend. I thought it was quite bizarre as a religion. Friend’s cousin, an RLDS teacher, used to close his eyes, close the Bible, allow it to fall open, and jab his finger to the page. Whichever verse he pounced upon was a “message” sent by God just for him. He may have been an anomaly, not indicative of others in the RLDS Church.

My Catholic aunt’s step son was RLDS, as well as his children (her grandchildren). His father (my aunt’s husband) had become Catholic.

However, it’s bizzarre that these 3 groups deny that Joe Smith Jun. was a polygamist. He was a polygynst (one man, more than one wife) as well as a polyandrist (some of his wives had more than one husband – Joseph plus the original man they married). How can they ignore the historical facts?:whacky:

Peace, Jay

What happens if you get members of the 3 RLDS groups and the Utah LDS in one room and all claim they have a burning in the bosom that Joe Smith was a true prophet and their’s is the one true church?

Break out the Tums?

Thanks for your posts.

At this point, what has split the RLDS is their prophecies. I cannot say what prophecies (if any) the Reorganized and Community branches have had, but the Remnant branch believes that God has finally sent them a true prophet who is (to put it vaguely) to lead Christ’s remnant through the last days . . . or something like that.

To be fair, there is probably a lot more to it than what I have provided here.

All three branches are relatively similar. They use the same scriptures (translations), have the same sacraments, similar hierarchies, etc… So I do not think it is essential to study them individually. Hopefully they will all come to the faith one day . . . in God’s time and way. I’m just not sure how I can help, but I want to very much.

Okay, let’s see how this might work.

close eyes, open Bible, point

Matt 27:5–And he =Judas] cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

Okay, not for me. Let’s try this again.

close eyes, open Bible, point
Luke 10:37–Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Whoa! Definitely not for me. Let’s try this one more time.

close eyes, open Bible, point

John 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

I don’t know enough about RLDS infact it’s the first time I’ve heard of RLDS.
About 15 years ago to young ladies came all the way from Utah to Ireland to convert me, but they couldn’t answer me on the words of Jesus, " Peter upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it".
This was after they said that “the Church died with the Apostles” so I’m thinking rubbish, Jesus is true to His word.
They left me 2 Morman books and said that they would return in 2 weeks, so I decided to browse the books so I could arm myself.
On their return I asked them about all those religions that couldn’t make up their mind what was the truth, I asked them were there any Catholics there ? they said they didn’t know

I did commend them on their 3 hour Bible study everyday, but apart from that I wasn’t for changing.
In the end I gave them each a picture of the Divine Mercy & haven’t set eyes on them since, maybe they’re Catholics now for all I know.
