I wondered as I read this article why no public reports of what is decided upon or it’s goings on is made public?

MOSCOW, DECEMBER 24, (RIA Novosti’s Olga Lipich) - The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church is to hold its last session this year December 24.

Talking to RIA Novosti, officials at the Moscow Patriarchate’s department of external church relations noted that Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow and All Russia will preside over this session.

The session’s agenda will not be made public in line with a long-standing tradition.

The Holy Synod, which comprises seven full-time and five temporary members from among the Russian Orthodox Church’s bishops, is a collective body subordinated to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. The Holy Synod adopts highly important church-life decisions in between the sessions of the Archbishops Council.

The Holy Synod meets several times a year; as a rule, one of its sessions takes place at the end of each year.
The Holy Synod passes decisions on all issues of public importance, also electing and rotating bishops, appointing monastery-and-convent priors and mothers-superior. Moreover, the Holy Synod decides on the establishment of new dioceses, opening new monasteries, convents, seminaries and academies, too.

Dear Sophia, Maybe Olga Lipich does not read Russian??

A comprehensive report of the Synod’s 24 December session was placed on the website of the Russian Patriarchate on 25th December.

I cannot yet provide you with an English translation of the above. After all, it was only two days ago. Patience…

Here is an English report (in part) of the 15th December meeting of the Diocese of Moscow.

Ah thank you. Someone ought to tell Olga 🙂 . I thought it so odd when she said that - how else does one get the “word out and about” if a synod meeting doesn’t tell anyone anything? It made no sense. I thank you for clearing it up.

I also liked very much what the Patriarch said - many of these same ideas and programs are talked about in various dioceses of the RC - we share far more on some days than even we realize.

Father Ambrose, is there any new news about the reunion between the Russian Patriarical church and ROCOR?

By the will of the Lord it’s on track. The October Synod of the Patriarchal Russian Church expressed its desire to press ahead with the dialogue started just over 1 year ago. Report is here

All the Dioceses of the Russian Church Abroad have held meetings of bishops and clergy and people and expressed the desire to proceed to eucharistic communion. Of course there are some who are not happy but they are not many.

This month there is a major meeting in New York, followed immediately by a full Synod of our bishops (ROCA) and every expectation is that they will desire to continue apace.

The last meeting of the two Commissions to discuss Union was held in November in Moscow. There is a photo essay about it here
