Rogation Days in USA

i’ve been reading about Rogation Days. This is a new one on me because my older Catholic relatives who predated Vatican II never mentioned them.

Did any parishes in USA celebrate Rogation Days before Vatican II? Did they have processions, or something else?

Do any traditional parishes or communities celebrate them now, with processions or something else?

I read that the major Rogation Day is always on April 25. Is this correct? Does it matter whether that day is in Lent, during Easter Week, or after Easter?

Any help or a reliable source would be appreciated. The stuff I am finding online seems to be half Anglican. I would like Roman Catholic info, please.

Go to fisheaters.com and Being Catholic. Yes, major rogation is always April 25 (by coincidence also the feast of St. Mark). It depends on what is meant by Before Vatican 2 and where. Up until the start of the 20th century the US was more rural than urban, and rural dwellers were more attuned to nature. By the mid point of the 20th century the population had become more urban, and the secular culture more ‘space race’ and more contemptuous of ‘non urban ways’ (think 'hillbilly). So I would say (and my family bears me out) that the rogation days were still celebrated with processions in more rural areas, especially midWest as opposed to 'the Northeast", but less in those 'city areas." Things are starting to come back; apparently some of the areas (not just TLM enclaves) are finding the idea of a ‘respect of nature’ ties in nicely with today’s ‘stewardship of the earth’ and are putting in prayers in the bulletins, etc to test the waters. Be nice to see it brought back, too. And I think Pope Francis would approve!

I should think when the hippies were changing the Mass, “respect for nature” would have been in their top 10 favorite themes, what with Earth Day and that.

We really need to get that feeling back of Mass being in tune with the rhythms of the natural universe God created.

The Ordinariate still keeps the Rogation Days (and Rogation Sunday) as obligatory memorials. Rogation Sunday is the Sunday before Ascension. The Rogation days are the three days preceding.

In many places in the U.K. it’s still a custom to ‘beat the bounds’ on Rogation days.

25 April is always in the Easter season. If it falls during Easter week, the the feast of St. Mark is transferred to the following week, and the greater Rogation is omitted that year.

The lesser Rogations are observed on the three days before Ascension Thursday. In practice, most urban parishes took little notice of the Rogations, while rural parishes were more likely to have the procession, litany and blessing.
