Role of Women in the Church

I am doing a short paper on the role of women in the Catholic Church.

My professor is having us use Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, Mary Ann Glendon, Catherine Pepinster, Sr. Mary Luke Tobin, SL and Phyllis Zagano (the last two are in favor of either women’s ordination or women deacons).

I am planning on quoting a lot of Alice Von Hildebrand as an additional source and I was wondering if you had any other good, traditional sources on the role of women in the Church?

And, what are your thoughts on the role of women in the Church?

(my apologies if this is an over done topic on the forums, I am just doing some research)

I’m still relishing Pope Francis’ sermon on the roles of women in the Church.
 
Sr. Joan Chittister might worth a read. She is co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative for Women and is a prolific author and lecturer.

Edit: I see you asked for “traditional” sources and I suspect many would not consider her traditional. Still, I don’t think her influence should be neglected, and her spirituality and mission are pretty authentic.

:eek: She is an infamous dissident. What is authentic about that?

I found JP2’s “Mary: God’s Yes to Man : Pope John Paul II Encyclical Letter : Mother of the Redeemer” to be very good in considering the role of women. I dislike using that phrase by the way. It gives the impression that men already “are” somebody in the eyes of the Church, and we have to find a place for women. We never talk about the role of men in the Church.

One of the problems is we tend to define a person’s worth in terms of power, status, and responsibility. It is easy to look at the Church hierarchy and see exclusion of women. But looked at accurately, priest, bishops, etc…are called to serve others, not sit in positions of temporal power. They have authority, yes. Grace is in action through ordination.

Grace also acts through motherhood and other vocations. The nice thing about JP2’s book is he points out that Mary is the mother of the Church. Think about it…a woman saying yes to her vocation gives birth to Christ, the Church. Seen in this light women are gifted or graced as fully as men. (this should be obvious to us, but again we think in terms of power and position).

A lot of the difficulties we have boil down to envy of other’s gifts in my opinion.

There’s also consecrated virgins, if you Google it, it gives a lot of theology on the feminine nature of the Church as Christ’s bride.

You can also look to the Fathers of the Church who wrote quite a bit on the role of women in the church.
