Hey all. Can two Roman Catholics be married in the Byzantine church without first changing their canonical rite?

You mean two Latin Catholics. Yes, they can, in theory at least, if they have a dispensation from both their own Bishops and the bishop whose jurisdiction the church in question falls under. But there has to be some serious reason for granting such a dispensation, such as there are no Latin Rite churches available to the couple to get married in. But Latin Rite churches are thick and fast upon the face of the globe so that this situation rarely occurs. It’s typically a problem that arises in the reverse direction, Eastern Rite Catholics getting married in Latin Rite churches.

In any case, they cannot do it for trivial reasons.

This came up for my daughter.

Both families attended and were attached to the Byzantine parish, but were legally Roman. Neither had formally changed ritual.

As they were both RC, permission was needed from the Latin bishop.

Until, that is, they submitted their change request, and the priest at the Chancery with that desk happened to be their EC priest 🙂

Ah, Father Francis. Practically legendary in the Eparchy. How are you guys getting along without him? (Not to totally derail the thread or anything.)

Actually, it was Fr. Marcus 🙂 but Fr. Frances was probably down the hall hollering about something 🤣

I believe that they’re still shuffling priests in and out. As there are only two, I believe, actually trained in that right, either ultimately one will transfer there or another will have to be trained. (Or just use his own highly shortened version: just make every gesture and movement much larger 🙂 )

In a pinch, they can use our priests and training, but they should really have someone trained in their own ritual.

p.s. For those that have know idea what we’re talking about, Fr. Frances Vivona of blessed memory died a couple of months ago. His parish, Greco-Italo right, is part of our byzantine/Ruthenian eparchy. he also served for years as the chancellor of the latin diocese, and opened two of the RC parishes in town.

In our sitiation, my husband converted to Eastern Catholic and I transferred before our marriage was blessed (I was a cradle Roman, hubby was protestant). The good priest said he no longer married Latin/Roman Catholics because they were using his parish/Eastern Catholic window to shorten or fix their marriage eligibility status. He’d marry them and they’d fly away basically. We had no where to fly to, our roost is Eastern Catholic.
