Hi all,
I was trying to refute the “once saved always saved” doctrine with Romans 11:22. What I had at the time was the classic 1966 Jerusalem Bible. However, when I got to that verse, the text in the JB read “…only for as long as he [God] chooses otherwise you too will find yourselves cut off” where most other translations read “…provided you remain in his kindness, otherwise you too will be cut off.”
My questhen then is, why did the JB translate it this way (for as long as God chooses). It would seem that the RSV and company indicate that we need to exert effort to remain in God’s kindness, but the JB seems to tell us that remaining in God’s kindness is purely a–well–act of God.
I know the JB is well-accepted by many orthodox Catholics, including Mother Angelica of EWTN. Any insight? Thanks.
