I am going to Rome on Sunday for about a week and I was wondering if anybody had suggestions to some ‘hidden’ gems that not everyone thinks about doing while there. I will have a general audience with the Pope, going to tour the Scavi, and have mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. Anyone know of anything else going on. Thanks!

I would Recommend the basilica’s of St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran and of St. Paul outside the Walls.

There is an exhibition of some of the Vatican’s secret archives which is well worth going to if you have the time it’s called Lux in Arcana and it has many ancient and interesting documents relating to Church history such as Luther’s excommunication, and Henry VIII’s divorce request on display. But if time is against you definatly see the Basilicas.

There is also a capuchin church known as the “Church of the Bones” which while a bit creepy is very interesting none the less.

Do not miss taking the tour of the Necropolis underneath St. Peter’s Basilica. I believe it is the only way to see the Clementine Chapel and the bones of Christ’s first Vicar on Earth, St. Peter.

There is also a very old church of the Sacred Heart along the Tiber that has a small Purgatory museum with accounts and relics of those who have visited and warned of the sufferings of that place.

Walk around the Piazza Navona at dusk/after sunset - look for the ‘finger dancer’ who uses his fingers as puppets on a little table stage he sets up. And drop in on all the little groups on the piazza, some singing, some playing instruments, etc. Get a gelato or tartufo dessert at nearby (see link). The tartufo is a signature dessert - often you will see people eating it while sitting near a fountain or strolling the piazza.

We had a guide (an Italian at that church helped us around) and he took us back to the right and down some stairs (to the Chapel of St. Helena maybe?) and there we saw the foundation of St. Helen’s house/palace (she was mother of St. Constantine - this church is built around/over her home). Very cool. Now I tell people I visited St. Helen’s house whenever they mention Constantine!!

If you can do an overnight trip, take the train to Assisi. It’s less than 2 hours and worth the trip.

The Church of St. Peter in Chains is one of my favorites. Be sure to see all the major basilicas.

Art abounds, but the Caravaggios at Santa Maria del Popolo and St. Louis of France are amazing. St. Ignatius has a fake dome - it’s painted on a flat ceiling but looks real.
