My mom…who is not Catholic…will be attending a wake, and will be present for the Rosary. I was going to let her borrow mine and also give her a pamphlet on the rosary so she can follow along. My question is…what rosary is said at the wake. Is there a standard set of mysteries. Is it scriptual? Thanks for any suggestions.

since the rosary is a guided meditation on the events of the life of Christ and the history of his saving action in history, as recorded in the Gospel and other NT writings, of course it is scriptural. the vocal prayer that is the setting for the meditation also has its source in scripture. A rosary for a deceased person may use the sorrowful mysteries as we recall Christ’s passion and death whenever one of our loved ones dies, or the glorious mysteries, as we recall that through Christ’s resurrection heaven has been opened for all of us. It is a matter of preference of the family or the person leading the rosary.

Hi Puzzleannie…
Doh. I should have been more clear. I know the rosary is sciptual, but I have heard reference to actually “quoting chapter and verse” during the rosary. I’ve never experienced that, so I was wondering if that was something they do during a wake. I’ve heard the rosary said so many different ways (rosary to end abortion…rosary for peace, etc). I was just asking if there was a specific “wake rosary”.

Heres another question…should I encourage my mom to follow along…what about sending my rosary with her?

Blessings…

A hearty YES to both questions! 👍 The Rosary is a sacramental which anyone of good will may pray. It may be very helpful to her to see and hear how the Rosary is prayed amongst Catholics, so she will better understand what it is and why we have this devotion.

When you pray the rosary you could meditate on any topic; there is an actual Rosary for the Dead though. It’s a chaplet you pray for the deceased. Google it up.
