If someone tried to pray the rosary silently, saying the prayers in their mind but without actually speaking them, does it still count as praying the rosary?
Also, I often have a hard time “meditating” on the mysteries. I know I’m supposed to try and visualize them, but I have a hard time doing this, and even when I do, I’m not sure what the point is.
Can anyone give me some advice about this to help me pray the rosary better?
Thanks

This is how I usually pray the Rosary, or by silently whispering the words

St Louis de Montfort has a “method” in which you insert the mystery in the middle of each Hail Mary; after the word “Jesus”
Example: Hail Mary, Full of Grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, Whom you conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen"

As to why we meditate on the Mysteries, this is the “meat” of the Rosary, really the whole purpose of the Rosary. Pope John Paul II said that without the meditations of the Mysteries, the Rosary becomes meaningless and “vain repetitions”

The St Louis de Montfort Method:
The mysteries are phrased with a view to incorporating them into the Hail Mary:
For the Introduction:
  1. Who increases our faith
  2. Who strengthens our hope
  3. Who perfects our love
Joyful
1.Whom you conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
2. Whom you carried in your womb, visiting St Elizabeth
3. Who was born of you in Bethlehem
4. Whom you presented at the Temple
5 Whom you found at the Temple

Sorrowful
  1. Who sweated blood for us sinners
  2. Who was scourged for us sinners
  3. Who was crowned with thorns for us sinners
  4. Who carried the cross for us sinners
  5. Who was crucified for us sinners
Glorious
  1. Who resurrected from the dead
  2. Who ascended into Heaven
  3. Who sent us the Holy Spirit
  4. Who raised you, Blessed Virgin, up into Heaven
  5. Who crowned you, Blessed Virgin, in Heaven.

A few other suggestions for praying the rosary better:
  1. Obtain pictures of the mysteries – this helps me keep focused on the meditation
  2. Try a scriptural rosary – there are many available-- usually in the form of a booklet that gives a bible verse to be read before each Hail Mary or before each Our Father.
  3. There are other aids that assign a particular aspect or detail of the mystery to each Hail Mary, not necessarily in the form of a Scripture verse. A great example of one is in the book “Carmel’s Call” which is used by TOC Lay Carmelites in our monthly community meetings. It contains the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries with a detail assigned to each Hail Mary.
