Rosary to the Interior: For the Purification of the Church

On February 2, 2018, which is the day celebrating the double _Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, there will occur throughout the United States the gathering of faithful in their parish churches to pray the Rosary for the intention of the Purification of the Church, and the Triumph of the Light of Christ over all sin and error.

While being inspired by the Rosary on the Borders in Poland, this Rosary event – titled Rosary To The Interior: For the Purification of the Church – does indeed have a different and very specific intention. Recognizing that the Catholic Church alone in this world was blessed and commissioned with the Light of Christ necessary for triumph over the Darkness of sin and error, and that this Light has now been severely obscured by the sin and errors of its own members, this Rosary asks us to turn our eyes inward in order to effect that interior purification which alone can once again make Christ’s Light manifest in its fullness to the world.

We are at a point in the history of the Church in which none of the normal apostolates which sustain the life of the Church - catechesis, all sorts of organizations in defense of faith and morals, apologetics, etc. seem to posses this spiritual power to resist and defeat the enemy, who is always encroaching and making progress against what appears to be even our best defenses (including the rosary). We pray the rosary “against” Islamic jihad, abortion, and all those forces and institutions which wage war against all that we hold sacred. And yet they continue to advance, seemingly at a geometrically increasing pace.

As Pope Pius X said, “Only the Catholic Church can build Christian civilization”. But the Church has now been largely stripped of the light and power to do so, and this because the salt has lost its savour, the light is hidden, the bride befouled in its members.

Let us now, therefore, turn Our Lady’s “armour of light” (the Rosary) inward in intention for the one thing now necessary - the purification of the Church. This effort is desperately needed. When I look over the topics that we are talking about, I’m struck by the preponderance of man-made solutions proposed to our nation’s problems. Predictably, the man-made solutions engender argument and strife. We have fallen into the devil’s trap. These man-made solutions and the strife they engender says a lot about our spirituality.

When Solomon had finished the Temple, God appeared to him at night. The message to Soloman was a prelude to Fatima: “If I shut up heaven, and there fall no rain, or if I give orders, and command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people: And my people, upon whom my name is called, being converted, shall make supplication to me, and seek out my face, and do penance for their most wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”

The message is clear enough. How many deadly compromises have each of us, from pope to the lowliest layman, made in our futile peace effort toward the world, the flesh, and the devil? Do not we all, each member, need interior purification? If we examine our consciences ruthlessly, I think we can see that we are, as Chesterton wrote, what’s wrong with the world.

Start preparing now for the Rosary to the Interior on Feb. 2; if your parish has not yet committed to hosting the rosary, ask your parish priest (or better yet, your diocesan bishop) to host it. Information is readily available at the Rosary to the Interior website.

Great initiative. And the Poster did not include that this double feast occurs on a First Friday - a liturgical Trifecta, as it were. In our current spiritual atmosphere where Adrienne von Speyr–a 20th century “mystic” and author who viewed Transubstantiation as Impanation, and offered highly questionable theology about Holy Saturday–is said to be on the path for canonization (move over Martin Luther - you have been displaced as the canonizee du jour), we have more than a few reasons for deep concern. Thus continued, concerted prayer using the power of the Rosary is a tried and true path to cleaning this grimy American stable out. A priest was once asked why it seemed so hard at times to pray the Rosary. His reply? Every Hail Mary is a bomb going off in hell. We need to spread the good news about a homegrown American Rosary on the Borders.
 
Thanks so much for posting this! Excellent way to build up the Body in love! So glad to read more about this from the link provided – knowing that over 200 Bishops were contacted, but that this is not intended to be a “top -down” event! Rather it is intended to rise from the hearts and minds of individual members of the Body of Christ. Clergy and People need to be together in this.

I will certainly do whatever I can by God’s Grace to encourage this at my parish. As a member of the Legion of Mary I hope we can get pastor’s permission. My own ancestors were from Ireland and I was happy to read that Ireland and Italy have followed Poland’s inspiration. I was beginning to think Poland would be the one country standing firm in the Faith when the Lord comes!

May this “Rosary to the Interior: for the Purification of the Church” be for our United States of America a true spiritual renewal for every member of the Body of Christ.
 
The replies so far posted on this topic truly touch the spirit of this effort. It should be abundantly clear by now that our only hope lies in the supernatural remedy of fulfilling the requests of Our Lady of Fatima. And this hope lies in the praying of the Rosary not just against the enemy without, but primarily for our own purification and the purification of the Catholic Church. Only when this purification becomes a reality will Christ’s Light and Grace radiate forth from His Mystical Body for the conversion of countless souls.

Possibly what is most unique about this event is its demand upon the individual Catholic. We cannot just wait for some massive event to be organized, and then, at the appointed time, drive to it and be a participant. The Rosary to the Interior: For the Purification of the Church requires that we put our faith and hope on the line, and actually translate it into charitable action. It is up to us to contact our relatives, friends, fellow parishioners, and pastors, and make this possible in our parishes. It demands that we turn our conversations, telephones, emails, facebooking, tweeting, etc. towards establishing this unity in prayer with others… It would seem especially providential that on this coming Feb 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on a First Friday. It would be a wonderful thing if this Rosary could also be the occasion for Exposition and Adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
 
It is beautiful that it is on a First Friday as well as the feast days. It made me look up the first Friday devotion again as it has been a long time since I did 9 consecutive months. I saw that two of the promises of the first Friday devotion are:
-Tepid souls shall grow fervent.
-Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
On that day I will be praying that those promises are fulfilled for all of our priests as well as myself.

I note that the USA just had a Rosary on the Coasts and Borders on Dec. 12. It had participants from all 50 states, US protectorates, and foreign countries in solidarity. I think it’s fine to have another, or as many as you want, but just noting the past effort.

A friend in the Legion of Mary cautioned me about this movement as being begun by a Mr. James Larsen and gave me his website…,HERE

Mr. Larsen is highly critical of Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, Vatican II, etc., etc., etc. It was misleading to read the OP here and the website for this movemnet without mention of Mr. James Larsen who apparently initiated it. I intended to alert the webmaster here at CAF yesterday but somehow could not find this thread. I’ll send an alert now. Sorry I did not do more research on the link and the movement before I sent out some e-mails to others hoping we might begin this in our parish.

I think an effort to pray the Rosary for increasing “purity of heart” as Jesus preached in the Beatitudes is a good thing, but I’m grateful for my friend’s caution about this movement.

Yes, I don’t want to dump all over people who wish to pray the Rosary for anything they are concerned about, nor do I want to start the whole Pope debate again in a new thread, but it does sound like this has the potential to be a rosary said for negative purposes, which I myself will not join especially since I’m in the middle of a 54-day group novena praying daily Rosaries for our Pope.

I note that the previous Rosary for the Coasts and Borders in USA was against Islamic jihad and against abortion, which were sentiments I can get behind much more than the vague “Purification of the Church” which can be interpreted in many ways, not all of them positive.

Yes, exactly. It seems a bit disingenuous for someone to have posted this website and used the initials RTI - which I did not connect to the title of the thread until today – (Rosary To the Interior). I certainly do not deny that I am not completely pure of heart nor is every member of the Catholic Church. We are sinners, seeking by God’s grace, to become pure in heart as Jesus calls us all – to be holy as God is Holy!

When I read Mr. Larsen’s website I saw such a critical spirit it was sad, and seemed to me that it was adding to even more confusion in the Church. We ceratinly need to pray, and pray the Rosary with as much attention and devotion as we can by God’s grace. I wrote to the webmaster at CAF and expressed my concern. I shall pray for Mr. Larsen when I pray my Rosary today, and for all of us in need of God’s Mercy.

Mary, Mother and Model of the Church, pray with us and for us.
Jesus we trust in You!
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful, kindle in us the Fire of Your Love.

Even if the devil himself had initiated Rosary to the Interior, it would be a worthy event to participate in. The Church is in need of purification with all the confusion in the Vatican that has presented itself with Pope Francis and the droves of “Catholic” youth who are leaving the Church. God help us if we are so petty to not participate in a good because someone thinks its author is unworthy.
 
This has nothing to do with “its author” and everything to do with the implied serious criticism of our Pope.
If you wish to pray a Rosary for the Pope’s guidance, or that he will “see the light” on a matter, fine (I already do this).
If you wish to pray it in the sense of “the Church is rotten to the core and needs to be purified” that’s implying that everybody who prays the Rosary with you is agreeing with that.
Like I said, I don’t wish to discourage people praying Rosary for any reason, but I do not wish to be part of prayer groups taking up a position I don’t fully agree with.

Tis Bearself, have you read the Rosary to the Interior website? I don’t see any hint of an attack on the Pope. It’s clear that he is talking about the members of the Body of Christ searching for answers as to why, despite all our active efforts, civilization continues to crumble.

Regarding America’s part in the decay of Christian civilization he correctly notes that we are a “…primary source of the evils that have permeated the modern world: abortion, contraception, the destruction of the family, pornography, homosexuality, materialism and consumerism, all the evils of the media which destroy the intelligence and morality of young and old alike, denial of the Kingship of Christ over all nations, and manifold heresies in regard to the Truths of Christ.”

Catholics, members of His Body, are far from free from all those sins; this is about members of the Church examining themselves, not examining the priests, bishops, or the Pope. That’s why it’s the Rosary to the Interior – the suffering interior of the United States as a reflection of the “dying of the light” in the spiritual life of each member of the Church.

Who among us has not compromised with the world, the flesh, and the devil? There are sixty-four moral virtues, with their opposite vices. Who among us has rooted out each vice and perfected all the virtues? Who among us can even name the sixty four? (I had to use Google, but found them and reading them was a humbling experience).

As he says, uniting ourselves to the sufferings of Mary is the way to find our secret sins, those hidden from our own sight. Why? Because her suffering reveals the thoughts of many. Thus the Feast of the Purification is the perfect time for the members of Christ’s visible body on earth to unite with Mary’s sufferings and pray for the discernment to know how “I” – not the pope, not the priest, not the CCD director, but I, have contributed to the loss of the Church’s influence.

The prophet Jeremiah might have been accused of being negative and critical. His times called for it.

I have not read all of Mr. Larson’s website by any means but what I have read is not critical of the popes personally; it’s critical of the “new theology” which formed them. And he in no way advocates “dissing” the pope; he is a staunch defender of the papacy .

Let’s consider the possibility that Islamic Jihad is allowed by God as chastisement for abortion and the other atrocities mentioned in the Rosary to the Interior website. Would it not be wise for each Catholic to ask “Why” the necessity of chastisement?

Perhaps RTI did not mention Mr. Larson precisely because he (she?) did not want to promote Larson’s “critical and negative” website. That could be prudence; it could be humility, it could be lots of things besides disingenuity. Who are we to judge?
 
It has been claimed in a previous reply that praying for the “purification of the Church” is too vague. I therefore would like to offer the following in order to “flesh out’ this intention:

According to Pew Research Polls (and basically verified by other polls), we have the following statistics in regard to the acceptance of serious mortal sins among American Catholics: 50% of American Catholics believe that abortion should be legal in “most or all cases” (and surely a much higher percentage believe it should be legal in at least the “hard” cases such as “life of the mother”, rape, and incest), 70% believe gay marriage “should be accepted by society” (this figure is up 12% in just the past 10 years), 89% believe that artificial contraception is morally acceptable or not a moral issue at all, 85% believe it is acceptable for unmarried couples to live together outside of marriage, 76% believe that unmarried, co-habiting couples should be allowed to receive Holy Communion, and over 60 % believe that divorced and remarried couples (without an annulment) should be allowed to receive Holy Communion (this last statistic may have grown significantly since the data collected here came before the apparent endorsement of such a practice in certain instances by Pope Francis in “Amoris Laetitia”, and before being put into practice by a significant number of bishops). All this would make it almost certain that over 80 % of Catholics in this country embrace at least one of these errors (and this without even considering the rejection of infallible dogmatic teachings of the Faith such as Transubstantiation, Original Sin, Mary’s Perpetual Virginity, the Immaculate Conception, etc.). If these people attend Mass and receive Holy Communion (I see very few abstain from communion these days), then this means that our churches have become temples of massive sacrilege.

Contrary to what has been said, this does not at all signify that we believe the Church is “rotten to the core”, but rather the opposite. We believe that the Head of the Church is Jesus Christ, and that at its core is the Holy Spirit. And it is precisely against Jesus and the Holy Spirit that such sacrilege is directed. It is no wonder, therefore, that we have failed to stop abortion, or that Islamic jihad advances despite our prayers.

There is therefore nothing vague whatsoever about this Rosary to the Interior: For the Purification of the Church, and certainly no despair concerning the Church. There is, however, a love and passion for the Church and for souls, which seeks to do the “one thing necessary” for our own souls, and the souls of all those who walk in darkness.
