I think I may have asked this before on this forum, but can anyone explain in a simple way what the method was for deciphering the Rosetta stone? I’ve been reading Wittgenstein lately and I think it may be relevant

The actual Rosetta Stone? It’s my understanding that it had the same passage written in different languages - one of them was one we understood. We could then use it to derive the hieroglyphic language we didn’t understand.

Correct.

The RS is a stelae approximately 2,200 years old that holds a translation from ancient Egyptian to classical Greek. When it was found in the 1800s, archaelogists understood classical Greek well enough that they could use the RS as a translation dictionary.
