RSV-2CE, opinions?

Well it’s almost Christmas, and I’ve decided that I’d like to buy a new Bible. I currently have the RSV-CE, and I love it, however, it’s very small. I am finding it hard to read for long periods of time, and it’s odd, because I’m only 18 and my eyes are pretty good! But anyway, I’ve been looking around the forum and all I’ve heard is that the RSV-2CE is one of the best translations out there.But I’d like some more (name removed by moderator)ut.

I found this Ignatius Bible at the Catholic Answers Shop, that title says it’s the Second Edition, however in the details part it says it’s that RSV-CE. So I am confused on which one it is.

If there’s any other good copies (preferably hardcover or leather), please refer me to the website.

Get the leather bound Ignatius RSV-2CE–it is probably overall the best Catholic bible you can get these days.

👍 and the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible - New Testament (which uses the RSV-2CE translation) is excellent!!!

I think this is the one we are all referring to, Cal. Unfortunately they haven’t completed their complete OT yet, although they are working on it, and individual books are coming out on Kindle.

Unfortunately, btw, Kindle is owned by Amazon, whose founder gave some 2 million to support legalizing same sex “marriage.” Whaddayagonnado?🤷

Thanks guys! Will probably buy the leather bound one, and might buy the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible when the OT comes out. Anyone know when they’ll have a full OT and NT study bible?

I also looked on the Ignatius Publishers website, and I found a good bible, that is cheap (35 dollars). So I am really happy! Though do they personally ship this to you, or do they use, for example, Canada Post/UPS?

The complete Bible will probably be a couple years. It is worth getting the Ignatius Study Bible-New Testament which is very good! Especially if it might be a couple more years for the complete Bible.
 
Does the RSV-2CE have the long or short version of the book of Tobit?

If it has the short version don’t buy it!

Why would anyone want an abridged bible?
 
I suppose the Catholic editions of the Revised Standard Version (RSV-CE, RSV-2CE) are preferable to some other translations. However it is at bottom a Protestant translation with modifications to various verses (a tiny minority of the total) to make it more palatable for Catholics. The RSV was a revision of the American Standard Version, which was an American edition of the Revised Version which was a revision of the King James Bible. Granted the thoroughly Catholic original Douay-Rheims was revised by Bishop Challoner with heavy use of the King James Bible, so there you go! Anyway, here is one example of a questionable translation from the RSV-2CE:

Romans 11:20
That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe.

As far as I know, that word “only” is not in the Greek. It’s not in the King James either. So why is it here? A subtle endorsement of sola fide? Here is the same verse from the Challoner Douay-Rheims:
Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear.
Here is an interesting table of verse comparisons of the different Catholic editions of the RSV which grew out of an earlier CAF thread. Explored therein is the interesting and convoluted story of different base texts of the RSV being used to create publisher-specific Catholic editions.
