RSV-CE or Douay-Rheims?

I’ve been looking for a Bible (still), and I’ve found two that I’m quite interested in getting. I’m not really interested in reading English translations that are too modern, I’d prefer a Bible that is somewhat modern, but keeps its original flavour. However, I don’t know which of the two is the better one for me. I also prefer a pocket sized Bible, or at least a Bible I could take to church or school.

I’d also like to add that I am interested in the King James Version (KJV), however, is the KJV Catholic?

I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the Holy Bible. I am a Catholic trying to get involved in his faith.
 
To me, it was an easy choice. Which one has “Hail, full of grace…” Luke 1:28, or “Friend, whereto art thou come?” Matt. 26:50 instead of: in Luke “Hail, highly favored one…” or in Matt. “Friend, do that for which thou art come”, both the latter make less sense than the former. In “…whereto art thou come” Jesus is telling Judas: “what a state have you fallen into”, whereas “do that for which thou art come” makes less sense since in verse 49 Judas has already pointed out and kissed Jesus. Judas has fallen and made himself an adversary of God, which we do also of ourselves when we sin.

It seems that, as the new Mass translations also show, the link between our actions and the words used even in the translations of our Bibles (Hail, full of grace with the Rosary, and the state we fall to by sin in Jesus’ remark to Judas) is important. It seems to me that the Douay-Rheims Bible is the best, if you can’t get both. I have several of differing translations, and all are available online: Bible Gateway and Douay-Rheims.org.

Nope.

And don’t worry about being a beginner to the Bible. Many of us on here are, including me. My advice is to buy a good Study Bible and set a task for yourself to read daily from it. It does not have to be much, just a chapter or so. This Study Bible is probably the best choice for beginners. It is faithful to the Magesterium of the Church and has good study notes. bestcatholicbible.com/product/SB2490

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! That is exactly what I am looking for! I have a study Bible but it’s not portable, it’s MASSIVE. (or Mass-ive LOL)

There is a Catholic KJV, or there was, when I was a little girl, because our family Bible is a KJV but the Catholic edition.

As has been said the KjV isn’t Catholic. However, the 1611 version of the King James, which is the original version, borrows heavily from the Douay-Rheims. The 1611 version includes the Deuterocanonicals/Apochrypha. You can buy it or use the online version here: ebible.org/kjv/indexbar.htm

That my have been the RSV-CE. The Revised Standard Edition is another way of saying the King James Bible, revised. So the RSV-CE is the Catholic Edition of the Revised King James Bible. 🙂
