RSV2CE vs NRSV

I’m thinking of getting a New Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition since I like the sentence structure better than the New American Bible or New Jerusalem Bible.
However, I like how the NAB translates certain words better and how its inclusive-language is more tame than the NRSV.

My current favorite is the Revised Standard Version - Second Catholic Edition but it uses older manuscripts than the NRSV, NJB, and NAB

So in regards to the textual basis, what are some major variations between the RSV-2CE and the NRSV New Testament?

For example:

NAB
Rev 22:21- The grace of our Lord Jesus be with all.

RSV-2CE
Rev 22:21- The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.

Really can’t go wrong with the RSV2CE.

However the NRSV has some very odd renderings of the text. Here is an example:

Mark 11:9-10

D-R
And they that went before and they that followed, cried, saying: Hosanna, blessed is **he **that cometh in the name of the Lord. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David that cometh: Hosanna in the highest.

RSV:
And those who went before and those who followed cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is **he **who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!”

NRSV:
Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

Are we to PC to call Jesus ‘He’?

Do you want to include different translations of the same base text in that? There are probably more that changed than stayed the same.

If you want to know about changes to the base text, I believe the RSV-CE2 uses the 17th edition of Nestle-Aland and the NRSV uses N-A 27. They may sometimes go against the decisions of N-A, but the changes between those two will be more or less a syllabus of the changes between RSV and NRSV. I believe the OT uses the same base text–Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia.

I realize it’s not very helpful, but I don’t know any significant changes.

Well, I do know a hobby horse of mine (Lk 1:34):

NRSV Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’
RSV-CE2 *And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” *

I also know that the Catechism (1997) includes scripture from the RSV and the NRSV (presumably where the RSV was too deficient). I wonder which verses were taken from the NRSV.

I don’t think the Catechism used the NRSV because the RSV-CE was deficient, they used it because they were avoiding the ‘thees and thous’. There was no RSV-2CE at the time the Catechism was written. And when they used the NRSV, they could not use any verses that had inclusive language. If the RSV-2CE had been around in the 90’s, I believe that they would have used it entirely. The Vatican did approve it for use in the Liturgy.

If the NRSV is good enough for the Canadian Bishops, it’s good enough for me.
