I went into a boutique nearby to look for a dress, and I found one that I thought was cute. When the sales girl came by she took the dress and said that it would be big a little big on me; it wasn’t my size so I knew it would be really big. The owner I am assuming was there also, and said that it would fit because it’s small, but the girl said it runs big so it won’t. I said I would just try it on to see (i said that to be nice). Anyway, I found another dress to try on as well. When I tried the dress that wasn’t my size, it was really big but I liked the style of it. While in the dress, I bended down bc I was fixing my shoes and I was holding it up i think, not sure, but anyway the strap ripped off! This had to be reallyyy cheap material bc it ripped so fast. But, the dress wasn’t cheap - i think it was $300 something. I was going to say something, but I was embarrassed, and plus I didn’t want to pay for it  I just put it back. I felt bad, but this had to be such cheap material to rip like that.

Anyway, did i sin??

I don’t think you sinned. However, the best thing to do is bring those ripped straps to the attention of the salespeople. I’m guessing based on the price this was a nicer shop. Nicer shops have people there who can fix those things. When you try stuff on, it’s reasonable to assume that some things are going to rip or something.

They’ll find it eventually and fix it, but for future reference just let the people know. They won’t hold you responsible since any damage you do can be fixed. It’s just good to let them know so they can fix it, rather than another customer finding it and getting a bad impression of the business. 🙂

Don’t worry about it at all. If it really nags on you, you can always go back and let them know but I don’t think this is necessary at all. I am sure they found it eventually and they just ran it through a sewing machine and made it like new. 🙂

I don’t believe you did anything seriously wrong, although you could have pointed out when you bent down the strap tore.

After all, if potential customers couldn’t try on the clothes they wouldn’t sell anything at all!

Accidents like that happen all the time in department stores, such as when the woman tries on a dress and accidentally gets lipstick on it as she draws it over her head, or a zipper can get stuck from time to time.

These accidents are usually reparable, and when they aren’t the store still doesn’t come out the loser. They allow for a profit margin to take care of those accidents.

Sin. No.
Rude. 100%

unless they display a “you break it” policy you cannot be charged. What you did shows poor character and bad judgement for not thinking things through. Even if you had purchased it and it had ripped most…if not all stores allow returns. And calling it cheap or shoddy or of a poor design is silly because it really could be very delicate and expensive.

Thank you both for your replies! That makes me feel better. I didn’t think I was sinning because it was an accident, but at the same time I felt like I was responsible to pay for it and I didn’t. But, you both are right - it would be really easy to fix. I guess I should have said something, but I had no idea what their reaction was going to be and if they would make me pay for it. They both were really nice so I felt bad if I told them it ripped and also for leaving it 😊 lol. I definitely will say something if that happens again next time, because like you said , it would leave a bad impression on the store 😦

I really wouldn’t worry about it. People don’t know policy in many of those stores, tear something, and then leave scared. I used to work in a medium-rate clothing retailer. If our clothes rip from someone trying them on we wouldn’t want to sell them anyway.

No one is going to look down on you for just leaving and not telling anyone. It happens all the time, and workers at such stores are used to it because customers have probably dealt with rude sales associates in the past. It actually makes most of us feel really sorry for the poor person who was afraid to let us know because of bad policy in other stores or something. lol

Really really don’t worry about it. Just let someone know next time, and they’ll be more than happy to take it and find one that isn’t ripped while repairing the item that tore or damaging it out of the system. 🙂
