London, December 19, Interfax - The parish of Holy Martyr Yelizaveta Feodorovna (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) is seeking to purchase the vacant Anglican church of St. Winifried in Birkenhead, Britain.
For that purpose, the parishioners who act by the blessing of Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain have to collect 100,000 pounds, and no less, to restore the church built in 1895.
Altars in the church will be consecrated in the names of St. Winifried and Yelizaveta Fyodorovna Romanova, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
On May 7, 2008, another ROCOR’s parish bought the Anglican church of the military camp in Colchester, Britain, where the soldiers had been instructed during the years of the Crimean War (1853-1856). The church was closed in May, 2007.
It is the only operating Russian church in the Eastern England.
Due to the unique history of this church, it will pay special attention to commemorate the dead Orthodox soldiers and all innocent victims who suffered from God-fighting.
