I am an ametuer geanololgist.
Two of my grandsons are 35 Ukrainian from the Lemko region of Gallacia. So I have an interest in their background.
In the small region of Connecticut sitting side by side were two Eastern style church’s.
My mother always explained that although we called both these churches Russian. There worship although similar to a westerner hid the fact that the one on the left was just as Catholic as the Irish parish our Italian family worshiped in.
They honered Pope Pius 12 as their leader just as we did.
My son - in-laws family came from this Church.
When they were married in our Church the Ceremony was co-celebrated with a Ukrainian Priest who gave the final blessing in Slavic.
Recently I came across an article about my son’s ancestor’s that confused me.
Both these church were stated by residents of Galacia
Even the the Othrodox church used Catholic in the title.
As science occurred when the Pope in the1930 redefined The
term Ruthenen to exclude. people from there homland
They apparently try to found a new church which was opposed by members of both the other churches.
The Church failed and apparently many of the members became Protestants.
I know back home we have Lemco Social clubs
but I never associated the club with a Church.
Can anyone shed some light on this period
Did the Pope ever make a decree
I always wondered when reading immigration record
why these people say they are from Austria but they belonged to the Ruthenen ethnic group.

There are several Catholic ritual Churches in USA and Canada that are derived from the eastern Catholics in the regions of Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania. From those that came to the USA and Canada eventually formed jurisdictions of Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church, and the Hungarian Catholic Church (Toronto) and there was also the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church which later renamed the Orthodox Church of America (1970) and a splinter, the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church (1938).

The progression of Catholic Bishops are shown below in the USA and represent a split to Ukrainian and Ruthenian (Byzantine):

Bishop Soter Stephen Ortynsky de Labetz
1907-1916 Ordinary of United States of America of the Ukrainians

Father Gaberial Martyak named Administrator
1916 Administrator

Archbishop Costantine Bohacevskyj
1924 Apostolic Exarch of United States of America of the Ukrainians

Bishop Basil Takach
1924 Apostolic Exarch of United States of America of the Ruthenians

In 1930 Bishop Basil Takach submitted the question of ordaining married men to Rome for a solution and it was decided to keep the existing restriction in place: that no married clergy can transfer to another country - this applies to Latin and eastern. This rule was in place for a long time. Read one history about it here:

Thank you
You gave me a lot of work.
I want my grandchildren to have an understanding of their heritage apparently it was lost.
All that remains is beautiful Easter Eggs. When their other grandfather dies that too will be lost.

There are still plenty of Ruthenian & Ukrainian parishes around that keep these traditions very much alive. Thus, you can help them embrace these and hold them for future generations in part by getting them to church!

Getting grandchildren back to church is my vocation
With one who is a terrific artist I am using iconogrsphy
as a way to interest him in his Ruthenian roots.
Prayer is the other
For my son who is excomunicated from the Catholic Church.and is an

The Western spelling is Galicia.

The history of the Ukraine is complicated. I am part Ukrainian.

ukraine.uazone.net/history.html

The Western spelling is Ruthenian, also called White Ruthenians and White Russians. In Polish, it is Białoruś (White Russia), in Ukrainian, it is Білорусь Bilorus. It is also referred to as Belarus.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Russia

Again, it is complicated. For example, in World War II, Ukrainian volunteers fought in the Waffen SS “Galicia Division” against the Russians.

Hope this helps,
Ed

The Belarussians are the White Russians.

The Ruthenians (Rusyns) are more commonly nick-named “sons of 'Rus”.
