At our church, the sacristan is pouring (after consecration) the sacred blood species out of a glass pitcher into about 12 glass wine goblets for distribution at communion. I read that this is sacreligious and that the sacred blood should not be stored in a glass pitcher, nor should it be “poured” anywhere after consecration. Which manner is correct, and if the former is incorrect and truly sacreligious, why would a priest be allowing this?

Thanks,
Ruthie

Chapter IV Holy Communion

106. However, the pouring of the Blood of Christ after the consecration from one vessel to another is completely to be avoided, lest anything should happen that would be to the detriment of so great a mystery. Never to be used for containing the Blood of the Lord are flagons, bowls, or other vessels that are not fully in accord with the established norms.

Chapter V

3.Sacred Vessels

117. … It is strictly required, however, that such materials be truly noble in the common estimation within a given region,[206]so that honour will be given to the Lord by their use, and all risk of diminishing the doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharistic species in the eyes of the faithful will be avoided. Reprobated, therefore, is any practice of using for the celebration of Mass common vessels, or others lacking in quality, or devoid of all artistic merit or which are mere containers, as also other vessels made from glass, earthenware, clay, or other materials that break easily. This norm is to be applied even as regards metals and other materials that easily rust or deteriorate.[207]

For crying out loud…this was done Sunday!

Thanks for the info… The Priest consecrated the wine into blood while it was in a glass pitcher and THEN poured the blood into separate cups… sometimes, I think ignorance is bliss…especially when I am running out of parishes to attend… 😦

Talk to your pastor (or e-mail if he has an e-mail address). This was the practice at our parish until two weeks ago. I read an article in Our Sunday Visitor some weeks ago about common liturgical abuses. This was one of them.

I e-mailed my pastor with a question about the practice and referenced the appropriate part of Redemptionis Sacramentum. After a couple of short discussions, he informed me that he and our deacon had discussed the matter, and the next time I saw him he told me that the practice would be changing.

It has. The chalices are now brought up to the altar and filled prior to being consecrated.

He thanked me for bringing it to his attention. So, hopefully, your pastor will be as receptive.

Blessings,

Susie
