S.S. John Paul II

Please move this threat if it is mis-placed . . .

At the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, there is a large statue of John Paul II, commemorating his visit there. At the base it states “S.S. John Paul II.”

Well, it can’t mean “saint,” because he hasn’t been canonized (although he certainly may be one); and, besides, S.S. or SS. would mean “saints” and he definitely isn’t more than one saint!

So, what does it mean? My guess was “santo subito” (spelling?) as in the banners at his funeral.

Any thoughts? Any experts? Thanks in advance . . .

S.S. is probably an abbreviation of the Latin or Italian for ‘His Holiness’ - though the exact terms escape me they’d probably be abbreviated thus.
