Sacramentals

Hi, I wanted to know more about sacramentals, as about the only thing I know about them is that they are objects that have been blessed. Can they be anything? Also, what does the blessing do to the object, for instance is it better to pray with a sacramental because it will give you an added blessing? Thanks!
