Sacrificial giving

With Catholic Answers, EWTN, and many other Catholic organizations going through a funding slump, I’m very concerned about our parish. We have a budget of about $10,000 a week, and rarely this year have we made that budget. Only about 1/3 or our parish use envelopes.

Any thoughts on how to encourage those that don’t give to do so?

I went to a parish council meeting last night where they’re basically targeting those who already give and support the parish in every way possible (they suggested monthly fund-raisers, and a couple other things).

Maybe the answer is as simple as just having that announced at mass. "We have budget each month of $10K and we aren’t making it. " Maybe people don’t realize that. Maybe they aren’t reading the bulletin?

It is said, over and over, in fact, some believe the priest talks about monetary needs too much. Probably they are not reading the bulletin, or gloss over it. I suggested to our pastor that he write a letter to all registered parishioners explaining what sacrificial giving is. You sacrifice something and give the proceeds to the church. For example, you don’t go out to lunch one day, either fasting or bringing food from home. Or skip Starbucks twice a week. Or suggesting an increase of $1 per family member put into the envelope. These are all little ways that people can see, yet our parish council wants to go after Conoco for big bucks (and probably their logo hung on the church sign!).

Fundraising takes time and planning. We already do a lot of fundraising, and we’re planning to do more. But what this parish needs is a shot in the arm now, and a long slow IV drip going forward. Fundraising is the shot in the arm. How to meet our weekly needs is what I’m looking for.

I have no ideas for you then. sorry. I don’t know what to say except pray I guess.
