I teach CCD, and had to attend a “Safe Environment” session—It was the most ineffective, but disturbing thing I had ever seen. There were the abusers—stars of the video – How on earth could they think this is an effective way to approach this horror?

I learned nothing new, yet was subjected to these perverts disclosing all their abuse techniques. If anyone didn’t know the material, it certainly could have been presented in a less upsetting manner.

I’m glad I don’t work with kids at the parish so I don’t have to deal with a program like that. So often they are disturbing to me. Others don’t seem disturbed by them, so I often wonder if it is mostly me. I’m one of the only people who has not had to go through a similar program.

I presume your diocese has it to satisfy legal requirements. Also, I assume they hope that if you know what people are like or are up to, you can better defend against it. Maybe they figure you’ll take it seriously coming from the people themselves. Although, it is hard to imagine someone not taking it seriously.

I had to take that class. It was pointless, in my opinion. I already knew the things people do and it was just reiterrated to me. I couldn’t stand to hear and read these things, though, because it was like they were pressing me, and those are things that I don’t feel like dwelling on those things, AT ANY PERIOD IN TIME.

Also they said the abusers were only in the second video, so I was totally unprepared for their appearance in the first, and didn’t get out fast enough.

Any potential perverts would have some tips from the material. These jerks should be in sackcloth and ashes somewhere—not “stars” in a video. These sick minds just might enjoy talking about their conquests.

The SET classe I have attended have been pretty useless. During the first one several people felt offended and got up and left. Not sure if they have since done the training or if they left their ministies since the training is required by the diocese.

I think that this is so new it will still take some time to work out the kinks. At some point in time the training will be more uniform with the exception of reporting laws differing from state to state. For now, I just sit in the back and catch up on sleep.
