No one heals himself by wounding another.
The devil tempts that he may ruin; God tests that he may crown.
When we speak about wisdom, we are speaking about Christ. When we speak about virtue, we are speaking about Christ. When we speak about justice, we are speaking about Christ. When we speak about peace, we are speaking about Christ. When we speak about truth and life and redemption, we are speaking about Christ.
Let your door stand open to receive Him, unlock your soul to Him, offer Him a welcome in your mind, and then you will see the riches of simplicity, the treasures of peace, the joy of grace. Throw wide the gate of your heart, stand before the sun of the everlasting light.
Our own evil inclinations are far more dangerous than any external enemies.
Prayer is the wing wherewith the soul flies to heaven, and meditation the eye wherewith we see God.
The rich man who gives to the poor does not bestow alms but pays a debt.
The Lord was Baptized, not to be cleansed Himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters, cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of Baptism.
If you have two shirts in your closet, one belongs to you and the other to the man with no shirt.
It is easier to look wise than to talk wisely.
The Lord Jesus himself proclaims, ‘This is My Body.’ Before the blessing of the heavenly words something of another character is spoken of; after consecration it is designated ‘body’. He himself speaks of his blood. Before the consecration it is spoken of as something else; after the consecration it is spoken of as ‘blood’. And you say, ‘Amen’, that is, ‘It is true.’ What the mouth speaks, let the mind within confess; what the tongue utters, let the heart feel.
Except a man fear the Lord, he is unable to renounce sin. (Sirach 1:27 Fear of the Lord expels sin)
The Church’s foundation is unshakable and firm against the assaults of the raging sea. Waves lash at the Church but do not shatter it. Although the elements of this world constantly batter and crash against her, she offers the safest harbor of salvation for all in distress.
As the print of the seal on the wax is the express image of the seal itself, so Christ is the express image - the perfect representation of God.
When in Rome, live as the Romans do. When elsewhere, live as they live elsewhere.
Your soul must hold fast to Him, you must follow after Him in your thoughts, you must tread His ways by faith, not in outward show.

St Ambrose on the martyrs:

“Take away the contests of the martyrs, and you have taken away their crowns.”

St Ambrose on prayer:

”He who asks of God, receives while he asks."

St Ambrose on patience:

So, then, you should also guard your humility. But if you are unwilling to appear too humble, you think like this, saying to yourself, “Am I supposed to let this man despise me, and say such things to my face against me, as though I could not open my mouth in front of him? Why should I not also say something to grieve him? Am I supposed to let him do me wrong, as though I were not a man, and as though I could not avenge myself? Is he to bring charges against me as though I could not bring together worse ones against him?” Whoever speaks like this is not gentle and humble, nor is he without temptation. The tempter stirs him up, and himself puts such thoughts in his heart. Quite often, too, the evil spirit employs another person, and gets him to say such things to him; but you should set your foot firm on the rock. Even if a slave is abusing him, let the just man be silent, and if a weak man speaks insults, let him be silent, and if a poor man should make accusations, let him not answer. These are the weapons of the just man, so that he may conquer by giving way, as those skilled in throwing the javelin win by giving way, and in flight wound their pursuers with harder blows.

St Ambrose on honouring parents:

“How much, has not thy mother suffered on thy account! How many sleepless nights, how many privations, how much anxiety has she not borne for thee! How hard thy father has worked, to provide thee with food and raiment! And canst thou be ungrateful to those who have done and suffered so much for thee?”

St Ambrose on endurance:

“It is the part of a perfect man to sustain like a brave soldier the onset of the most terrible misfortunes, and like a wise pilot to manage his ship in a storm, and as he runs through the surging billows, to avoid shipwreck rather by facing the waves than by shrinking from them.”

St Ambose to St Monica:

St Monica constantly kept the conversion of her son in mind. She wept much, begged God insistently, and never stopped asking good and wise people to speak to her son and try to convince him to abandon his errors. One day St Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, whom she had already visited several times, took his leave from her in words that have been the consolation of so many mothers and fathers throughout the centuries: “Go away from me now. As you live, it is impossible that the son of such tears should perish.” … St Augustine … years later, perhaps recalling his mother, … exhorted: “Do everything in your power to obtain the salvation of those in your family.”

St Alphonsus quoting St Ambrose on life and death:

As St. Ambrose remarks, the present life was given to us not for repose or enjoyment, but for labour and suffering, that by toils and pains we may merit Paradise. Hence the same holy doctor says, that, though death is the punishment of sin, still the miseries of this life are so great, that death appears to be a relief rather than a chastisement.
