Born in Cologne in 1033 to a noble family, Bruno studied at the cathedral school in Rheims where he was ordained priest and later taught theology for 18 years. When he criticised his archbishop, who obtained his see through simony, he was discharged from his office at the school.

In 1084 with six companions, he withdrew to the Grande Chartreuse, a wild and lonely place in the mountains near Grenoble. They built a small church and little huts to live in, entering into that combination of solitary and communal living that characterises Carthusian life to this day.

After six years, however, Pope Urban II, one of Bruno’s former students, asked him to go to Rome to be his advisor. Bruno found it very difficult to leave his community but served the Pope well. He was later allowed to establish another foundation in Calabria.

He never saw his brethren in France again but kept in touch with them by letter - one of which survives. There is also a long letter to an old friend in which he speaks of the rest and refreshment brought to the spirit through natural beauty, He wrote: “Only those who have experienced it can know the benefit and delight to be had from the quietness and solitude of a hermitage.”

St Bruno died in 1101. The Carthusians came to England in 1173. By the late Middle Ages there were nine houses here. Several Carthusian monks were executed for their faith during the Reformation. Three are among the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. There is a Charterhouse, founded in the 19th century in Sussex.

Our Pastor gave a very serious sermon on the Carthusians and St. Bruno, he sounded very contemplative.

And then, he ended it on a light note, the Monks (and some people may well know this) make an herbal liqueur.

What Is Chartreuse Liqueur?.
Chartreuse is an herbal liqueur produced by Chartreuse (or Carthusian) monks in the French Alps. With centuries of history, Chartreuse is one of the oldest and most mysterious spirits still available. It is an Old World liqueur that has remained true to its tradition in every sense. To this day, the distillation process is handled by monks at the Chartreuse Monastery in Vauvert and the distillery in Voiron. Only two monks from the order know the secret herbal recipe, which was laid out in a manuscript in 1605.
Interesting, it does sound like it would cost a lot. And there are 2 distinct versions. Maybe some day. It looks like the webpage even refers to a 3rd kind, specially aged or something.

And Chartreux and Carthusian are similar or the same name? It’s just the translation it sounds like.

Lord I watched a video on the Carthusians. It was brief. We should all offer prayers for these men 8n hermitage and also the Carmelite Sisters who pray and pray to Our Lord Daily.

Life surrounds God. All that is done for Him.
I am deeply humbled by these Holy People.

St. Bruno is the popular saint of Calabria; every year a great multitude resort to the Charterhouse of St. Stephen, on the Monday and Tuesday of Pentecost, when his relics are borne in procession to the hermitage of St. Mary, where he lived, and the people visit the spots sanctified by his presence.
