Saint Gerard Majella - The Patron Saint of Motherhood

I think he was Mom’s favorite.

I grew up with depictions of St Gerard in Mom & Dad’s bedroom, St. Maria Goretti in mine, St. Anthony of Padua in the upstairs landing and Venerable Pius XII then Blessed John XXIII in the dining room.

I had decided not to write in details why I posted this, but I think it is God’s will for me to share.

About two weeks ago, a friend of my asked me and others to pray for her sister-in-law to have a safe delivery. I went home and prayed that night. I went to sleep right after that. During my sleep, I dreamed and saw St. Anthony and another man holding a Crucifix. I woke up and immediately thought I ought to pray and asked them for my friend’s sister-in-law. I aksed St. Anthony to help her not lose her child, but I had no idea what the other person holding the Crucifix was.

I had few devotional books, and I looked for this strange man holding the Crucifix. It turned out it was St. Gerard and the prayer that came with it was for pregmant women. I had not known about him until that night.

I realized it was not just a normal dream that I had, and more importantly, God always wants the Saints to help us for His Glory and we ought to take this advantage of intercession of the Saints. 🙂

My mother also had a very strong devotation to him. She had lost 4 children in her 2nd trimester and was now pregnant with me. Someone gave her a prayer card and a medal of St. Gerard. She asked him for his prayers for her and her unborn baby regularly, as did my father.

One day when she was 8 month pregnant she was in town for a check up. Following her check up she when into town shopping and for lunch. Just before she started eating lunch she felt somehting in her pocket - the prayer card of St. Gerard. She never had it in her pocket but kept it under her pillow at home. As she took it in her hand, she heard a small voice telling her to go back to the hospital at once.
The hospital staff were very surprised to see her again and just to calm her down, they said they would listen for the heart beat to show her everything was ok. They found the heart but it was much fainter than in the morning and while they were listening they found it grow even fainter. She had an emergency C section and I was born safely.
My mother believe that St. Gerard’s intervenion and prayers saved my life and possibly hers too.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story. I hope you don’t mind but I sent it to my mother who has a very strong devotation to him and always likes to hear about him.
