The Virgin Mary appeared to him when he was a boy, offering him the crown of martyrdom, which he accepted. Then in Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp, he offered his life for a stranger. And so he would be canonized. He is a great sign, a sign of the love of God winning victory over the murderous evils of our time.

I first read about Fr. Kolbe way before he was a saint. I was a kid in the 70s and there was an article about him in an old issue of Catholic Digest that told the story of how he volunteered to take the place of the family man who was selected to be killed in the prison camp. The story must have been printed around the time he was beatified. I never forgot the story and was so happy when he was canonized many years later, and now there is even a church and school named after him a few miles away.
