I was looking for pictures of Saint Maria Goretti and her picture of her remains came up. Her skeleton (or remains or whatever) is encased in a wax thing. I understand that some of the saints’ bodies are uncorrupt like Saint Bernadette but why show a wax covering on a skeleton?

Thanks!

I was able to view the remains when they came near my town. Was a very humbling and very cool experience.

I am also curious as to why all the wax though. It seems common with saints that they give them a wax mask. Perhaps to save the people from the gruesome view – That’s the most obvious thing I can think of. At the same time, what is the point of looking at wax?
