(No offense meant with thread title, just making a point and trying to be eye-catching at once.)

Hi All!

I’m trying to remember the name of a saint (and actually, a saint book) that I read about in elementary school. We had this terrific book in our library, I think it was yellow-covered, but I know it was paperback, and it was a book of stories about the lives of saints written for kids and young people.

I remember in the book that there was a saint whose brother was struck by lightning in bed next to him. The saint went on to become a monk, but he was always terrified of thunderstorms, and would get up during storms to pray (and maybe douse himself with water, but I’m probably remembering that wrong), and I can even see the illustration still, but I can’t remember the saint’s name. I’ve not had luck yet finding the book or the saint, but I’m betting one of the many knowledgeable people on this site will be able to help. Also, if you have similar “Who was that?” questions, I guess this would be a good place for it!

Oh! Oh! Oh! Golly!!!:eek: On EWTN they ran a recent episode of “Super Saints”… and I believe it was the saint you’re seeking… but I can’t remember his name!!!:doh2:

Was it St. Francis de Sales? Hmmm.

If you place the words used Catholic books
into a search engine, like Google, you may
find those who carry used or out of print books.

I once ordered a used book - that was originally
printed in 1784, from a bookdealer in England.
It was a biography of St. Benedict Joseph Labre -
written after Labre’s death by his confessor,
Father Marconi.

This was an English translation of this work,
published in 1786. I mean, when I talk “used books”
some of them are perfect treasures. I couldn’t
believe my good fortune in finding a translation
of this work.

In terms of finding the book, I have found that booksellars often
really know their stock, because they love books.
If you can describe the book, one of the used Catholic
booksellars may know which book you are looking for.
Especially if you think it had a yellow cover. That may be able
to assist in the search. I have loved books all of my life,
and never became a booksellar - because I would not
have been able to part with a book. 🙂 Best wishes

[BTW, when I’m looking for a used copy of a book, I often

Was the book “Best Loved Saints” by Fr. Lovasik? Does it have a picture of leafless trees and a dirt road lined with yellow daffodils on the front? The cover is predominantly yellow.

While I was looking for a picture of that book cover, having been provided the title by CatholicSam, I found another book of saints for children that has a yellow background to the pictures on the cover of same.

If I understand correctly, this work was published in 1986.

Of course - when I think books from childhood - I’m
thinking the early 1950’s - when Howdy Doody was king,
and before hula hoops were “in.” 😃

Sounds traumatic. I wonder why St Thomas would be sharing a room with a sister when he had a few older brothers he could bunk down with? :hmmm:

As a former Catholic, I just report the news,
I don’t make it. 😃 Though I feel far more
at home, with the RC “family,” now that I’m no
longer a member. The big thing to note here,
is that Thomas was spared the fate of his
female sibling. All so he could end up saying -
in his late 40’s - that all that he had written was
as “straw.” Think! of the parchment that that
man marshalled, to confect his screeds.
Today, we would say that he wasn’t “green,”
and that he left a big inky footprint. :rolleyes:
