Rocco (or its variations Roch or Roque)
He is the patron saint of dogs.

Also, Bernard, since we have St. Bernard dogs that used to be kept by monks.

My brother-in-law had a dog that was completely black except for a square-shaped patch of white fur at his throat. He looked like he was wearing a Roman collar. So they named him Padre.

Jo for St. Joseph
Gerry for St. Gerard
Seb for St. Sebastian or even Sebastian itself.
Pat for St. Patrick (had a neighbor call their rhodesian ridgeback cross Pat).
Max for St. Maximilian Kobe
Bart for the apostle Bartholomew
Blaise for St. Blaise

Depending on what breed could also help in deciding on a name too.

These are some great suggestions! I’m thinking of getting golden retriever.

Bosco, after St. John Bosco. It was said that several times when he was in danger, a mysterious gray dog showed up to protect him. Or Grigio, which is what he called that dog.

One of my uncles used to have a dog named Bosco years ago. I always wanted to name another dog that, but my son is the one who has dogs and he gets to name them! 😔

Not a saint, but we had a dog called Samson. He was by far the biggest puppy in the litter.

Charlie for St. Charles Borromeo or Charles Lwanga
Romulus - found in 1916 Roman Martyrology
Robbie (short for Robert) for St. Robert Bellarmine
Ralph for Ralph Sherwin who was one of the 40 martyrs of England & Wales
Basil - also found in the Roman Martyrology
Sergius - could be shortened to Serge/Sarge - Roman Martyrology
Simon - for St Simon Stock

In the parish where we were living a few years ago, the pastor was called Fr. Bosco. Next time I meet him, I’ll tell him it’s a dog’s name!

This may seem irreverent, but years ago we stayed at a Benedictine monastery for a retreat and one of the brothers had a dog named Guido… after “Father Guido Sarducci” on “Saturday Night Live”!
