Here’s an odd question :whacky: - does anyone know where I could get patterns for Saint’s costumes (any Saint…I’m too desperate to be picky)? Preferably free online. The REASON for this odd ? is that I am a Catechist for the 7 and 8th graders- and would like them to dress up in the saint’s costumes for a Halloween thing.

any help would be apprectiated…

FYI- I can’t respond to posts from work- but I can lurk (a firewall thing) so I thank you all in advance in case you answer and I don’t acknowlege is for a bit!

All the major pattern companies (Simplicity, McCalls, etc.) have patterns for Nativity and Easter Passion costumes. I have used them to make costumes for the Catholic school’s Nativity and for the teen Passion Play. I am sure with a bit of ingenuity, you can take a basic Passion, Nativity, or other historical costume and add the “attribute” of the saint–keys for St. Peter, arrows for St. Sebastian, and so on. Check out Medieval paintings of the saints to identify their “attribute”. An “attribute” is the unique feature that identified the saint to the illiterate faithful. So in the European Catholic cathedrals (and they were all Catholic before the 1500s), the stained glass windows, frescoes, tapestries, and similar would have the Bible stories and the lives of saints visually identifiable. A book about the lives of the saints would probably help with the saint’s attributes. Good luck. Sounds like a fun project.

Considering how many saints were in religious orders, a monk’s or nun’s habit would work, and would likely be pretty easy to come by.

Here’s what’s worked for us in the past:
  1. a set of gray or olive sweats, sandals, a silver or gold fabric “poncho” (just cut a hole in the middle of a length of fabric that will fit over the shoulders to desired length), a leather belt, a pair of cardboard wings and an inexpensive (as little as $5 at a discount store) sword and shield set… St. Michael the Archangel!
  2. For girls, remove wings, add a banner with a cross and fleur-de-lis… St. Joan of Arc!
  3. If the sword and shield set comes with a helmet, remove wings… St. George!
  4. brown or tan skirt and shirt, mocassins (Wal*Mart sells inexpensive slippers that look like mocassins), braids, beads, and a cross made of sticks… Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha!
  5. a brown flannel bathrobe, rope belt, sandals, rosary… take your pick!
    a) St. Francis of Assisi… add a couple of fake birds
    b) St. Anthony of Padua… hold a baby doll
  6. use a basic “king” or “queen” outfit… St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Edward the Confessor, the Blessed Mother as Queen of Heaven.
  7. Striped shirt and pants (pajamas, if the stripes are wide enough), print “Auschwitz” on a strip of fabric and stick it on the front… St. Maximilian Kolbe!
I’m sure I have others, but this is all I can think of right now!

Have fun!
