The Salvation Army does a lot of good work through many important programs in our communities. I see it every day on my street. When you refuse to put a few coins or bills in the kettle, you’re not helping anyone. Not exactly a shining example of Catholic charity.
Jesus said that whoever is not against you, is for you. Therefore we should not oppose the Salvation Army in areas that are in agreement with the Church, and certainly not with their charitable efforts. However, most of the time there would be no reason why we couldn’t donate to St Vincent dePaul instead, so why would we not want to do that?

I just heard that Salvation Army is a supporter of Planned Parenthood. I found this link to a list of Planned Parenthood supporters that you all might be interested in. It is appalling. This program of Satan’s to kill the unborn is huge. You can copy and paste

Here is an interview.

B: You involve yourselves with questions such as abortion. I am assuming that The Salvation Army is against it?
S.C. That’s too simple. We are not as conservative as our catholic brothers and sisters. There are situations in which abortion is the lesser evil, for instance in cases of severe deformities of the foetus, [or] rape. We try to support women who find themselves in this situation and to be loyal to them, even if they make decisions that we ourselves might not have made.
Sorry guys, murder is always the greater evil.

Looks like I’ll be giving my Christmas red kettle offerings and donations to St. Vincent dePaul. Then I don’t even have to guess.

Thanks everyone - this was interesting.

I’d rather give to a Catholic organization than to a Protestant organization any day. 👍

I stumbled across this thread while doing some research. I wanted to share this website www.fightpp.org This website has a complete list of companies and charities that support Planned Parenthood or any other orginization that is part of the abortion industry.

I think that there is something to be said for watching where your money goes, but it can be taken too far. How many people make sure that their money won’t go to fund the defense of a priest who has harmed children before handing it over? That’s just an extension of the same logic used to say that you can’t support an organization that does a lot of good because it might in a roundabout way support something wrong.

does the Salvation army give to the united way? If so then they are giving to Planned Parenthood. UW is a big donor for the PP.
no they opted out of United Way years ago because of the limitations and demands placed by UW that threatened their ministries.

It is the Salvation Army’s experience that when an unwanted pregnancy occurs, it is best to advise that the situation be accepted and that the fetus be carried to term, and to offer supportive help and assistance with planning.
In situations where our counsel has not been accepted and an abortion has taken place, The Salvation Army will continue to show love and compassion and to offer its services and fellowship to those involved. A serious commitment to the protection and care of the unborn calls us equally to a commitment to the promotion of societal systems that are conducive to wholeness, a reasonable quality of life and the fullest possible development of the potential of all persons and ages.

Doesn’t read to me as support for abortion, but support for those who have one against their advice. Not a lot different than project Rachel and similar programs. These people do a lot of good for the poor, the homeless and the hungry. Unlike many conservative(politically) Catholics I know, they are there for those in need.
I know this thread is old, but I came across it in researching the Salvation Army’s position on abortion. It seems the above reply ignores (not assigning intention, perhaps it was an oversight) the following statement from the Salvation Army’s International Positional Statement on Abortion:

"The Salvation Army believes that termination can occur only when

Carrying the pregnancy further seriously threatens the life of the mother; or
Reliable diagnostic procedures have identified a foetal abnormality considered incompatible with survival for more than a very brief post natal period.

In addition, rape and incest are brutal acts of dominance violating women physically and emotionally. This situation represents a special case for the consideration of termination as the violation may be compounded by the continuation of the pregnancy."

I’m sorry. This is not a pro-life conviction on the Salvation Army’s part.

There’s no way one can insure that they never spend a dime that might go to support immorality. And it’s not really fair to expect that of people. HOWEVER, when you do know of a company or organization that is supporting something as heinous as abortion, especially a charity for goodness sakes, it shouldn’t be too much to ask to direct one’s donations to a charity that does not involve themselves in accepting, approving, or supporting abortion in any way.

Does the Salvation Army do some good? Sure they do. However often times that good comes at a great price. Here in Tampa, Fl there is a Salvation Army house for men with drug and alcohol addiction. Sounds like a great program, right? What if I told you that this same house pushed their Protestant faith to such a degree that it makes the men there attend there own Church and openly attacks anybody who has another faith (including Catholics)? They also tell the men that the solution to their addiction is to belief in their “church” and accept Jesus as your “personal lord and savior?” In fact they do not even do baptisms in their churches!

For me, I would rather spend my money on food and give it to the St. Vincent De Paul. If you want to know where your food goes, you can sign up to help!

The Salvation Army is pro-abortion. I don’t give to them. The following is a letter sent by them to a concerned Catholic (from www.losangelesmission.com):

*Editor’s note: the text of the Salvation Army’s position paper follows. *
The Salvation Army believes in the sanctity of all human life. It considers each person to be of infinite value, and each life a gift from God to be cherished, nurtured and preserved.
The Salvation Army supports efforts to protect and promote the welfare of weak and defenseless persons including the unborn. It takes seriously the rights and needs of both the fetus and the mother.

The Salvation Army holds to the Christian ideals of chastity before marriage and fidelity within the marriage relationship and, consistent with these ideals, supports measures to prevent crisis pregnancies. It is opposed to abortion on demand or as a means of birth control.

**Termination of a pregnancy may be justified in those rare instances where in the judgment of a competent medical and allied staff the pregnancy poses a serious threat to the life of the mother or could result in irreversible physical injury to the mother; and in those instances of proven rape or legally defined incest or where reliable diagnostic procedures determine that a fetal anomaly is present which is incompatible with postnatal survival for more than a few weeks, **or where there is total or virtual absence of cognitive function.

+I hadn’t ever encountered knowledge of this stance of the Salvation Army (SA) before . . . and am so thankful that it was brought to our attention here at Catholic Answers . . . willful selective deliberate killing/murder of innocent vulnerable tiny unborn babies is always wrong and incredibly evil! And such activities clearly break the Holy Commandment of God . . . “Thou Shalt Not Kill” . . .

I didn’t have any bills or change when I came out of the grocery store yesterday after shopping for our family Christmas celebration feast . . . *so couldn’t contribute to the little red SA pot *. . . but had determined when I go back for a few things later this week to have money on hand for this . . . certainly the SA does considerable good on this earth . . . but I am determined to never contribute to any organization that I know supports the abortion killings of unborn children . . . for any Christians to try to justify such killings with rationalizations is embracing incredibly delusional lies of the enemy of souls . . . and is participating in those lies by trying to call and present clear and dark horrifically immoral evil . . . as good . . .

May God have mercy on their deluded souls in this critical arena of life . . .and lead them into the light of Holy Truth . . .

. . . all for Jesus+

As far as I know, the SA pretty much sends all the funds from their kettle contributions to fund their programs helping the poor. While I wish they’d be a little more firm on their stance on abortion, that isn’t going to stop me from putting a dollar into the kettle outside the store where I work, every day when I’m heading home. I’d rather help my neighbor in need than let them suffer over a technicality.

Wow! So, the Salvation Army’s position that abortion is justified in cases of rape and incest, and when the baby may not be perfect physically is just a technicality that doesn’t bother you and cause you to maybe give that dollar a day to a charity that does not condone, accept, and/or approve of evil “under certain conditions?” Why not take that money and donate it to your local pro-life crisis pregnancy center. Wouldn’t that also be helping you neighbor, with no “technicalities” to be concerned about?

Please do not use a confrontational tone with me. It’s rude at best, and uncharitable at worst.

That said, I will give to the charities which I choose to give to. If you as an individual wish to give to a crisis pregnancy center, that’s fine for you. I personally would rather give something to help the poor whom we already have. I’ve had a long-standing issue with a lot of pro-lifers, since all too often, they come as if they’re more concerned for the unborn than for the born who are struggling to keep a roof over their head and food on their table. Unfortunately, your response is the very sort of thing that I am tired of seeing from pro-lifers.

I’m sorry if you feel I have been rude or uncharitable. I consider calling the Salvation Army’s justification of abortion in any circumstances a “technicality” to justify your donating to them not such an attractive position to take. Yes, free will allows you to do as you please and to ignore this unfortunate truth about the Salvation Army.
