Hi, I’m currently in RCIA and therefore new at this…
(Let me begin by saying that I share this in sincerity not wishing to insult or put down any Protestants. Afterall, it was the Catholic church that has taught me that there is much love and goodness in our Protestant brethren to be admired and emulated).
I got interested in this forum after reading a thread on ‘what must I do to be saved’.
I started reading the thread which espoused the clarity of the truth I now believe is found in Scripture…plus all the Catholic comments were great and right in line with what I see in Scripture…
…Then came the first Pro-Protestant comment…and, guess what…that familiar confusion returned.
I’m not saying it is the work from those powers of darkness but I do know I sense no unity and that does not, in my mind, speak well for anything Luther may have intended especially while the Catholic church continues it’s 2000 year fellowship of unity in faith and moral teachings.
With that in mind, my confusion about salvation ie. ‘what must I do to be saved’ is actually one of the reasons I am converting to Catholicism.
When my search for the truth began by looking at different Protestant teachings in order to find their true church, I very quickly discovered a ‘soup’ of confusion from Protestant articles and other writings.
I now personally believe there are some 33,000 Protestant denominations. I learned they all have their own Popes either behind the pulpit or sitting in the pews.
I further learned none of these denominations has anywhere they can go to resolve conflicts. They simply form a new church or denomination which they have been doing since around 1517 or shortly afterwards.
They also all believe that they can, by ‘Sola Scriptura,’ interpret any Bible passage and believe the Holy Spirit lead them to their conclusion. In fact, what they and all of us do, is simply come to our own interpretation of Scripture, not necessarily the correct interpretation.
Natural reason helped me conclude they can’t all be right…and…the Holy Spirit cannot be confused…so you need an authoritative interpreter.
The most logical conclusion for me, therefore, is I am choosing the church authority that comes closest to what Jesus and the Apostles left us.
We all look at Scripture through the lens of our own belief so I choose to look through the ‘original’ glasses for truth ie. the Catholic church lens. There were no other lens around during the early church.
It believe it is impossible for two Protestant denominations to set down together and, even after prayer, to agree on what important passages mean. I find something very disturbing about that.
They each claim their own ‘authority’ ,like any of us,…so I choose the authority of the original church…
…and, if the gates of hell have prevailed against that church (Catholic church Ignatius of Antioch 107 AD) then, not only is there no good reason for being Catholic, there is no reason at all for wanting to be Christian ie. if Jesus’ own promise to this ‘visible’ early church failed after a few decades, then there is no ‘true authority’ anywhere.
