I’m Italian.
Matteo Salvini is one of our most important politicians of the moment.
He is the head of the right-wing populist and nationalist party Lega, “The League”(formerly known as Lega Nord, “The Northern League”, and for its regionalist and even secessionist positions ), wich now has 33,8% of the votes in the electoral surveys and is the first Italian political party.
He has been our Interior Minister since the 1st of june 2018 until the 5th of septemper 2019.
I’ve noted that some Traditional Catholics and conservatives in America have a tendency to show sympathy towards him, because of his restrictive policy on immigration (especially from Muslim countries ) and LGBTQ+ issues and the fact that he kissed a Rosary and asked for the blessing of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in some public occasions.
However, I think I have some good reasons to think that he could just be an hypocrite.
In fact, despite these outward sings of devotion, he doesn’t live like a Catholic at all.
Some decades ago, he was a Communist.
He has never gone to confession for more than 20 years.
He married a woman with whom he had a son, then he divorced and had a daughter with another woman. He is currently with his third fiancee since he divorced.
Despite some public declarations against abortion, he once told in an interview (wich I’ve personally seen on TV, I know what I’m talking about ) that no decent man should ever dare put this “women’s right” into question.
I hope that some day he will become a sincere Catholic. Until that day, I feel I can’t fully trust this man, and my advice to others is to do the same.

Judge him based on how he leads the country, not his personal life. It’s not your job to judge the sins he has committed, that’s God’s and only God’s job. “First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:5

Interesting. I didn’t know that Lega Nord morphed into just Lega now. So what happened to Cinque Stelle, is it not popular anymore? what is the direction of Italian politics nowadays? right or left?

Cinque Stelle is still at the government now, but it’s not the first Italian political party anymore, as in the last Italian elections. The current governmemt (Conte II ) is now left-wing, but the right is getting stronger.

His declaration on abortion during the interview is not a matter of personal life. Also, aren’t we supposed to discern everything and everyone - even thought the judgment is left to God alone?
