There is only one way to prevent same-sex marriage from sweeping the nation, but I doubt Americans would go for it:

Criminalize divorce. Make divorce illegal.

Come to think of it, that would probably prevent heterosexual marriage as well.

I don’t think criminalizing divorce would totally prevent same-sex marriage, but it would separate the wheat from the chaff of the GLBT community. There are those who desire same-sex marriage for it’s novelty, for monetary purposes, and for show and then there are those who truly and simply want to live a life of love and service to another. As a gay man, that is the example I would like others to see rather than the drag queens, rainbow flags, and pride parades.
