He existed! He did an amazing thing! He may have done some horrible thing as well, but so did nearly everyone! Should the brand new MLK memorial be taken down because he didnt want gay people to get married?
The trying to make a lot of money? The brutal conquest of native people who where by his own description healthy, generous, and hospitable? Who helped save men and cargo when the Santa Maria shipwrecked? By (or allowing his men to) mutilating them when they didn’t play his game, hunting people for sport, feeding living people to dogs, enslaving people, and rewarding loyal men with their very own sex slaves? Sex slaves of whom by his own admission were most valuable around 9 or 10?
I mean, you can find dirt on ANYBODY if you look close enough. That’s just a simple truth. But Columbus is so dirty he’s a big rolling ball of it. And removing a statue from CIty Hall isn’t going to erase history, or rob children the opportunity to learn about his contributions, for weal or for woe. It’s only saying “we are choosing not to honor this individual in this way anymore.”
