Sanctuary lamps: Are they necessary?

How necessary is it to have the sanctuary lamps lit while the Blessed Sacrament is in the Tabernacle?
 
Hi,

The sanctuary lamp is required and not a minor thing. After all, it signifies the sacramental presence of almighty God! What greater significance could a lamp possibly have!
